It's interesting how close the averages are to each other. The collective judgment so far is that these are roughly $30,000 vehicles.

Just what I said. I thought this was a exercise in guessing what the bids go up to not guessing what some dealer thinks his car is worth. The bid is the real number people are willing to pay between that particular group of people bidding.

Well, I'm golly gosh darn sorry you were misled. This is an exercise in what these cars will SELL FOR, assuming they sell. Not what a dealer thinks they're worth. Not what the bidding will stop at if the car doesn't sell.

Considering what's at stake here, this whole this is, of course, of earth-shattering importance. If you want to withdraw your guesses, please let me know, and I will get you off that list pronto. It was never my intent that anyone playing this little game be embarrassed!

jaunty75, it's cool you started this thread.

It does seem like many of the cars that roll across the stage leave with the words "The bid goes on" being said. Does Mecum have a high success rate of selling those cars? I have no idea. Say none of the cars sell. Then all we have are high bids and a bunch of our guesses. Somebody was the closest.

Checkout this rule from the Barrett Jackson fantasy bid:

If a resident of Canada is selected as a potential Grand Prize winner, to receive the prize, he/she will be required to correctly answer, without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a time-limited skill-testing question.

Doesn't seem very neighborly.

I don't really know. If you listen to the commentators on the HD Theater broadcasts of the Mecum auctions, you would believe that there is a large selling rate of those "bid goes on" cars. But those guys are probably paid to say that.

You can get this information from the Mecum website if you sign up for their free "infonet" service. I did that just now and then looked at the results for some past auctions. At just a quick glance, it looks like maybe 50% of the cars with a reserve price have sold. The "bid goes on" business apparently goes on for quite some time as, for example, some of the cars from their April 2010 auction in Kansas City are still shown as being available under the "bid goes on" program.

Well here are my guesses.

1970 442: Reserve Not Met

1957 88: $26,001

1948 street rod: $25,002

What do I get if I win?

Well, you're guaranteeing you won't win anything with the first guess as the prize is only paid out if the car sells. Secondly, what the prizes are is described above.

The mirrors look like they came off of an f body or some other GM car.

It seems that my little game here has come to nothing. Two of the three cars we were guessing on are no longer on the auction list. The only one of these three cars still there is the '48 Street Rod. As noted elsewhere on this site, there are now 11 Oldsmobiles up for sale, so 10 of them were added since I started this.

We can still see what the '48 sells for, assuming it does.

I was wrong here. Two of the three original cars were still for sale, and both sold.

The '70 442 W-30 sold for $24,750, and the '49 street rod sold for $26,500. The total of the two is $51,250.

Based on these, we have "winners."

For the '70 442, the two guesses closest to the actual price were by 6inarow, who guessed $24,000, and earheads7, who guessed $26,400. With a difference of only $750, 6inarow wins.

For the '49 street rod, the two guesses closest to the actual price were by coltsneckbob, who guessed $25,002, and italianice, who guessed $28,500. With a difference of $1,498, coltsneckbob wins.

As far as the total of the two, the two guesses on either side of the actual value were by gearheads78, whose guesses total $44,000, and geckonz08, whose guesses total $52,053. 6inarow and bunser were also both close at $54,000. geckonz08 is the winner.

So 6inarow, coltsneckbob, and geckonz08, please check your fax machines for your prizes. I'm faxing each of you a $5 bill. What's nice is that I can fax the same $5 bill three times and still have the $5 bill when I'm done.
