Who wants to play "guess the selling price?"
Mecum has a 750 car auction coming up in early December (2-4) in Kansas City.
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/consig...consignday=All
In all of those 750 cars, only three are Oldsmobiles.
Anyone want to play a little game of guessing what they'll sell for? We can keep track of the guesses, and the three winners (one for each) each get a free, one-year subscription to classicoldsmobile.com!
Here are the three cars. The descriptions are exactly as they appear on the Mecum website. Yes, the street rod has a Chevy engine, but it's still an Olds.

I think the '57 will bring the most.....those cars are much less common and very desirable. Obviously the 442 is a hot car but I think that Eighty Eight is so sweet. I'm not really into the street rod so much but it's still an Olds (aside from the motor!)

A 1970 "W-30" with 4spd, A/C, and "4.30" gears???

Yeah, it says the AT was swapped "early". I'm guessing all that other stuff was added at other than the factory.

Nah, we ain't doin' it this way. We need real numbers. Closest is closest, whether you're above it or below it. On TPIR, you're actually trying to win the thing. That's not the case here.

Thank you. I've decided that there will be, in addition to the three first-place prizes (one for each car), an overall grand prize given to the person whose TOTAL difference is the smallest. In other words, we'll add up the sale prices of the three cars, and we'll add up each person's predictions, and whoever has the total nearest the actual total wins.
The grand prize consists of a year AND A HALF of free membership to CO. Plus, the awards are additive. If you win all three individual awards AND the grand prize, you will win 4.5 years of CO membership. If you like, you can ask for some or all of that in the form of gift certificates. They'd make great stocking-stuffers for that hard-to-buy-for friend or person-who-has-everything this upcoming holiday season!
I've added totals to everyone's entries. I've also noted at the end the averages of all the guesses for each car and the total of the averages.

But if any of these don't sell, there is no winner for that car. Simple as that.

Contest organizers have decided to add yet one more prize for the overall winner. A great deal has just become available on Mexican Riviera cruises. A ship called the Carnival Splendor is available, and the weekly rate is very cheap at $14.95 per person. Of course, the ship doesn't leave port, it has no electricity, all the food is gone or spoiled, and the ship only looks like it's moving because what remains of the crew just moves paintings of ocean scenery past the portholes, but you can't beat the price!
Of course, an alternative cruise is available on virtually any other cruise line, and the ships really do leave port. The winner gets a free one. However, there is a $2,500 per person "handling fee" payable in advance.

Good point. I think we have to do the same as the auction does. If the car doesn't sell, we don't know the selling price. Sometimes they sell later with that "the bidding goes on" thing, and if it sells over the course of the weekend, they'll put the price on the Mecum website.
But if any of these don't sell, there is no winner for that car. Simple as that.
