Angry What you think - FUBAR?

Basically most of what happened was dumb but whatever. Replace radiator - pulled out of garage and sprayed down engine bay. Upon starting again you hear the noise in the video. Pic is what came out of engine on the first draining.

I think that water went in via air filter and oil breather (not the same one you see in the video - I think the breather was stock; black with a filter screen).

Things done post engine noice - engine flush and seafoam; then replaced with rotella 15w-40 and marvin's mystery oil. Changed distributor cap, rotor, pickup, plugs, and wires..wouldnt start after pulled in garage prior to replacing these. Something here also fixed the running/dying thing. Replace thermostat with 180 degree one.

Video of car running here!

1972 olds cutlass 350.

Any ideas or is it FUBAR?

The oil

Looks like a substantial amount of water got into the oil pan. Much more than a few drops in through the carb. Possibly a cracked block near a water jacket. Since you have changed the oil now, I'm curious how it is looking.

Way to much water to come from just a wash down. My money is on a blown head gasket. I'm also curious as to what the oil looks like now. Where ever it came from it's not good. Did you take the oil filter apart, any metal in the filter material folds.... Tedd

I didnt take the filter apart but the oil looks pretty good now from what I can tell - drained it twice. May need to run it a bit more to get a better look. I looked at the block and it appears solid but it was mainly on the filter side that i looked at. Nothing leaking on the ground.

Water sucked in the carb / EFI intake etc is BAD

Did you pull the spark plugs?? Pull all of them. If water runs out when you turn the motor over you may have wrecked the engine

Water does not compress like fuel and air. It will destroy the pistons , rings , rods etc I saw an engine from a police pursuit car that ended up in a lake. It was JUNK after that

I do wish you all the best. Hope you can fix your car for not a lotta $$$

So dummy light isnt coming on for oil pressure and i did remove the plugs and turn over engine before replacing plugs...was pretty uneventful. BTW that look like the perfect color I would expect for chocolate milk...i have some after market gauges that I can hook up to check actual oil pressure unless there is an easier way. I pulled the drive valve cover because I thought it sounded like loud rockers; ran the engine and oil flowed like expected...FYI...not the rockers I am used to.

Am I wrong or does it sound like an upper engine noise.

It sounds like you have bent rods. My son did the same thing about a month ago. Spraying his engine down . Once I pulled the engine apart, 3 rods were bent.
Hope you will have better luck with your engine.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound flippant,..
I would expect an overhaul, antifreeze and oil don’t mix, I’ll bet bearings are gone..
just my .02

The video sounds like some bent push rods, I would not run it much. Oldsmobiles have non adjustable rockers so the preload is preset. Any wear or part failures results in valve train noise.

I ain't no expert, but what I hear in the video sounds like the fan blade hitting the shroud, or something involving the fan hitting something. He said he did have the radiator out, and that involves work around the fan area. Heck, it doesn't sound a whole lot different from the sound we used to get sticking a playing card into the spokes of our bicycle wheels (held there with a clothespin) to get a "motor" sound when we were kids. Just faster.

Just a guess.

First, check your oil filter for metal
Next Pull distributor cap and look for contact between rotor and cap
Then check for excess lass in drivetrain.
By the way, whats idle speed, seems fast{high} in video
Also, agree with above, could be fan hitting shroud, or timing tab hitting balancer.
But, You still have the isuue of a gallon of water or antifreeze getting inside your motor. If it went thru the carb, youve got internal damage, checking oil filter will show metal if bearings, lifters, cam, rods ,pistons afedamaged

Good suggestions - I will check all of the above. I will pull the push rods when I get home. No mechanical fan; when I pulled the radiator I installed an electric fan on the new one.
