Last weekend I noticed that the steering box was leaking fluid from the end (toward the front of the car) of the gearbox. I studied the CSM, watched a few U-Tubes and ordered the rebuild kit. I've never rebuilt one of these. I was surprised to see how dirty it was inside. Cleaned everything, proceeded one step at a time. Putting the recirculating ***** back in took several try's, but I got it back together. Now I need to readjust the steering wheel. Another rebuild to add to my list.
Well, I currently have no Oldsmobiles. But I thought about the W-30 today...a lot. The journey, the people, the history, and the man. I do miss the car, I'd be lying if I said I didn't.
Strange what a car can do to your life. Met some cool people. Had a few fun rides in it. Took some great pictures. Learned a little about the history of Oldsmobile. And made a little history of my own.
At the end of the day, I'm not sure if I'd do it any differently. It wasn't easy, but it sure was amazing. And I'm lucky to even have had that experience. Just really lucked into what some hear have searched for years for and haven't found. So I'm really grateful for that. And again for all the help along the way.
Now back to what you've done to your Oldsmobiles today.
Getting ready to send it out to get A Complete Overhaul of the rear end, It has a Factory 4:10 posi unit in it now, but I am changing it out to a 3:42 Posi Setup. I bought all the parts from a fellow member. I bought the following:
Yukon 3 series clutch type posi carrier
Yukon 3:42 ring & pinion
Complete bearing & seal kit for everything
Yukon Axle Assemblies
Everything but the housing replaced.
I've had the car since 1975, kind of sentimental.
Nothing. It's still in storage. It snowed this morning and the last fifteen day forecast shows thirteen days of rain and it starts in the morning. Sucks.
I wish I could jump this high off the starting line.
About to rebuild the front end. Tubular uppers, cross drilled and slotted rotors, new powder coated calipers with steel braided lines and ceramic brake pads. QA1 adjustable shocks. I'm replacing the weak Moroso trick drag springs with some MOOG 6204 units. I'm hoping that will lift my front end a bit higher and still give me a bit of a drag spring effect.
last two nights after work i installed 4 new shocks ,upper ball joints ,sway bar end links, and sway bar bushings in the 80 cutlass supreme.what a difference in handling! need a rear sway bar to tighten up the back end .
Been a long time since I have posted anything up. Installed a hidden stereo system, mounted some gauges, almost have the interior finished up, figured out my brake issues with front disc conversion (push rod length), installed blinker switch and lever, plugs and wires and most importantly got it out on the road for the first time this year, today! Here it is in it's spray bomb glory:
Got my wife's Vert into the shop finally. Got it up in the air for an oil change a greased the front end. Also prepared for the paintless dent removal guy to come this week and fix the boo boo I put in the rear quarter when parking it last winter.
I rebuilt the fuel pump for my '63 Dynamic . $45 for a kit and $5 for an old stock filter .
Sure beats sending it off somewhere to have it rebuilt for $350 .
A limb/ small log was left by either a wood cutter or fell off a logging truck and I had the misfortune to nail it with the 55.It tilted up like a hockey stick and smashed my passenger side rocker molding, almost took it off the side of the car. Today was the try and remove the dent and straighten the bend in it and re attach it day. It's on there but I'm not sure I can live with it yet. Wrinkles are a bitch on a chrome strip to hide.
The last time I replaced those moldings it took two years to find NOS units and cost a kings ransom.Does anyone know why the rocker panel moldings listed in the Fusick Catalog (#566338/9 same number for both models) will fit a super 88 and a 98 when there is 8 inches difference in length? Doesn't seem right. Just call me tin bender from now on..... Tedd
Tedd, that just sucks. I don't have the rocker panel moldings on my 54. They were so bad that they were just removed during the restoration. I have heard that NOS ones of near impossible to find and as you mentioned cost the kings ransom. Have you ever measured ones for a tri-five Chevy? I imagine Danchuks or Ecklers reproduces them.
Tedd, I'm just guessing its stainless that got dented. If so there are people in plating shops who can make bent, dented, scraped stainless look new. Ask around. I had my rear bumper straightened and rechromed on the 47. It was done by Stockton company: https://www.westcoastchrome.com/ They had another shop in town that they work with to straighten weld and grind bumpers and then West Coast does the plating. The price was the best of several shops estimates, they were easy to work with, delivered the bumper back in just a few weeks. I was very happy with them. I think they do stainless, but you would have to ask. In my case I sent some photos so they could see the bumper and guards before they estimated cost.
ps. Couldn't this be an insurance claim? Surely it goes above whatever your deductible is.

Red, ya it almost made me sick when it happened (did make me mad) Damn stick was right in the middle of the road but in a shaded area and I was in direct sunlight, didn't see it till I hit it at about 25 miles an hour.
The Chevy thing might be a option but just looking at them I would think the Old's would be longer.
I'll give Fusick a call tomorrow and ask about the 88 and 98 number being the same, Who Knows could be a misprint.
Though my car has been a driver most of it' life it's starting to look like it more and more......Tedd
Jerry I have 0 deductible so it shouldn't cost me anything I don't think unless there is a bitch for me taking it off and working on it already.
If Fusick has them and they are the correct length and look good that would be the way to go. My catalog shows them at $210 for repops and that would be a good price. The last set of NOS I found took two years to find and that was about 10 years ago, fat chance I'll find a set again.....Tedd.

Tedd, my 1960 Olds parts book lists part #566338/9 as fitting all 1955 Super 88s and 1955 98 four door sedans .
1955 98 hardtop coupes , hardtop sedans and convertibles took a different number 566340/1

I replace the actuator located under the dash towards the firewall. If your mechanically inclined, this job is not a problem. If not, bring it to a mechanic shop and let them break their back by doing this job. You need to recalibrate the HVAC system by pulling the fuse out (located under the driver side rear seat). First you need to start the car up and set the a/c mode to "Auto" and then turn your car off, pull the fuse out, remove and replace the actuator, install the fuse and start the car up for 2 minutes while the a/c recalibrate (the a/c will say 72* on the display), turn the car off for 10 seconds, start the car up and go thru all the modes (defroster, vent, heater).
2002 Bravada, this actuator controls the air flow to the defroster and heater.
As you can see the crack, I had a problem of getting no air flow to the heater. No matter what buttons I pushed, the air flow goes to the defroster and vents. When I turned on the a/c, the cold air will fog up the outside of the windshield and I had to use the wipers to wipe it off. Its a pain in the *** to drive on a hot humid day with the a/c on and your windshield fogs up your vision.
Well I finally got around to doing basic maintenance that should have been done earlier in the year. I changed the fuel filter, cleaned the air filter , changed the oil and gapped and changed the spark plugs. The plugs looked ok. Nothing scary other than normal carbon build up. I dont know when they were changed last. It runs great . New plugs make this thing idle really smooth.
Just put my car on a 6 week minimum vacation. I just broke my left fibula(ankle bone) ,nice diagonal break. No weight bearing for 6 weeks ,then possible usage after that. Hard to shift with cast on and no bending of ankle. Could be worse Have a good day all. Bassinguy
Started installing a new carb on the 69 early this morning. The last time I drove the car I was running really bad and wouldn’t idle. The old QJet needs to be rebuilt but I don’t have time to mess with it right now. I need to to finish bending up a new fuel line and wire up the electric choke.
