Watching the Mecum Kissimmee Auction. Anybody have much intel on Lot#222?
Is it me or does the side sport strip not align correctly to the adjoing rear qtr stripe on the passenger side? Also, unusual to see no less than 3 1970-442 W30 4-speed verts on sale at any given auction. I am viewing online live, will be on tape delay this evening.

Of course, I'm always skeptical of a "W-30" that has shiny new repro red inner fenders... If 96 is the right number for 1970 W-30 4spd converts, I think we've seen more than that many cross the block in the last few years.

In the world of authenticating a a rare car of this nature, I assume the broadcast card rains supreme vs so-called orig window stickers or even protecto plate cards? Although, obviously the more info the better. Agree about those red inner fenders, sure do look awfully new

The broadcast card is just about the best proof you can get for a 1970 W-30. Protect-O-Plate won't prove anything, and there are far too many bogus window stickers around for that to be meaningful.
honestly, misaligned stripes would lead me more to the side that it IS authentic. People tend to over restore these cars. Mopars are about the worst when it comes to over restorations. We hold these cars in such high regard now but some forget they were built by guys on assembly lines, not guys in white lab coats like the ads lol.
A broad cast card will not prove the authenticity or status of a 4speed W-30, and in some cases for the earlier build convertibles not even the status as a W-30.
Approx. 15 years ago give or take, several boxes with thousands of original vintage blank broad cast cards were found and individual cards were being sold on eBay, for lots of $$$$$$. So to those who place all of their confidence in just a paper document or just about anything that can be readily reproduced, I would advise caution.

Door stripes on both sides don't even look straight. Maybe just optical illusion? Angle at rear 1/4 doesn't look right either.
These poor cars are just being recycled through these auctions.....
Nobody cares of they are "correct" any more.
Yes, many folks DO CARE and more so than in the past....but "getting there" can be an extremely expensive and not-so-financially-great if one worries about amounts spent VS. finished value.
You "see" more "incorrect" cars now with the internet being the major force it is. Pre-internet most folks would have never seen the pics of all these auction cars like we see today. Pre-internet there wouldn't have been these discussions where ANYONE FROM ANYWHERE in the world could look at pics and make comments.
The "correctness level" in general is MUCH HIGHER today compared to 5, 10, 15 years ago.
Yes, I'm in the resto business but I'm still of the opinion that folks should do to their cars what THEY WANT TO DO.....mild resto, modded, leave "as is" and drive the heck out of them.
I agree.....looks like many of these cars are just "auction queens" but don't overlay that observation on the overall hobby and business. In fact, back to my "now VS. then" comparisons above........there are surely MANY MANY MORE auctions these days compared to 5, 10, 15 years ago or at least MANY MORE folks watching the auctions than in the past.

Unless there is GM of Canada documentation. A few years ago I spoke with a restorer of a 1970 Chevelle LS6 convertible who had GM of Canada doucumentation for his car. He figured that due to the abudance of those cars with faked broadcast cards, that his car was verifiable, and therefore much more highly valued with that crowd.
I guess having a 72 W30 with the X in the VIN and also the GM or Canada documentation gives me two reasons to not wonder . Now to find the original engine....
With those incorrect paint gaps at the end of the stripes I'd bet those are the stick on stripes from Phoenix graphics.
what stick on stripes? I provided photographs of the OW transmission tag . Frame number and the engine bay yesterday. I did not provide any photographs of the W30.
The car that I am asking about is an automatic transmission car .The car in the photographs is a 4 speed car and is not the car that I am asking about. Thanks
