W27 Cover Real?
#45
IIrc, wasn't there a 10 bolt aluminum W27 COVER only available across the parts counter in '71-'72? I acquired this a handful of years ago & was wondering whether it was real or not? It has a couple chips on it & has a jack cradle mark on the bottom like it had been on the car a long time. It has been sandblasted? The face is not milled & there is no part number on it. I was told it was a dealer purchase but don't know for sure. Any help is appreciated.

The rear end installed in 1971 Oldsmobiles was the "corporate" rear. It was identical to the Chevy rear with the exception that Olds still used bolt-on retainers at the ends of the axles instead of C-clips. But it makes sense that the cover would look like a Chevy cover in terms of bolt locations, oiling provisions, etc.

So it is a 12 bolt Chevy diff with retained axles?
This would be one very sought after diff because for years the drag racers would cut off the c clip ends and weld on Ford ends.
My brother had this done to his diff in the late 80's. Back then you had to use used ends as they did not make new ends at that time for this purpose.
The gears and carrier are Chevy 12 bolt?

No, I'm talking about the 10-bolt corporate rear, used by most (all?) GM divisions throughout much of the '70s (I believe). Someone here is more an expert on this than I am. Please chime in.

According to others "not" as they say that it is a good reproduction but that the casting defect above the left top side of the "W" is the give away. They may be but it's still a very nice cover. If compared to what Parts Place and Fusick are selling it will make you feel like it's an original. I don't think the Chinese could replace one these nice. I beleive it was sold to me without prior knowledge and in good faith of it and i purchased it without prior knowledge of it and in good faith so i wont lose any sleep over it but i will try to find one that is original.

Sadly, it is a repop as well. There are more than just that little notch that points to a repop.

Even with the dissapointment of not owning the original just the simple fact that the early reproductions are made in the USA and actually well made except for the "cry drop" should be appreciated. The new reproductions are simply horribly made by any comparison to the initial reproduction cover. Use it or lose it.

Integrity
First of all you will not get rich either way but most importantly it's one thing to sell something in good faith and it is another to sell in bad faith. If you know it's a good reproduction sell it as just that because sell a reproduction as "the real thing" would show zero integrity and zero honesty. Sure they are suckers born every minute but that doesnt mean that you should take advantage of them either. Think about your "Legacy".
