Did the factory ever make one for the 12 bolt Chevy as a bolt on?

Not that I am aware of. W-27 was exclusive to Oldsmobile.

W-27 Covers for 12 bolt Chevy are currently available and have been for a long time. I've never used one so I don't know when they were released on the Market.

that diagonal ridge on the left side would make me tend to think this was made to use on a chevy rear end with the c clip axles.

The rear end installed in 1971 Oldsmobiles was the "corporate" rear. It was identical to the Chevy rear with the exception that Olds still used bolt-on retainers at the ends of the axles instead of C-clips. But it makes sense that the cover would look like a Chevy cover in terms of bolt locations, oiling provisions, etc.

Do you have more information on the 71 corporate diff?

So it is a 12 bolt Chevy diff with retained axles?
This would be one very sought after diff because for years the drag racers would cut off the c clip ends and weld on Ford ends.
My brother had this done to his diff in the late 80's. Back then you had to use used ends as they did not make new ends at that time for this purpose.
The gears and carrier are Chevy 12 bolt?

I think he was wondering if they made one for the Chevy 12 bolt. I do not believe they ever did. Just the repop/aftermarket people made one

No, I'm talking about the 10-bolt corporate rear, used by most (all?) GM divisions throughout much of the '70s (I believe). Someone here is more an expert on this than I am. Please chime in.

Easiest way to tell. The repops have (6) fins on the inside were as the originals have (9) fins on the inside.

Ok before I get too excited, I was told my W27 cover that came on my W30 (not with a W27 rear end) was aftermarket. However, according to your assessment, IT'S REAL?

Here are front and back pictures....

According to others "not" as they say that it is a good reproduction but that the casting defect above the left top side of the "W" is the give away. They may be but it's still a very nice cover. If compared to what Parts Place and Fusick are selling it will make you feel like it's an original. I don't think the Chinese could replace one these nice. I beleive it was sold to me without prior knowledge and in good faith of it and i purchased it without prior knowledge of it and in good faith so i wont lose any sleep over it but i will try to find one that is original.

Sadly, it is a repop as well. There are more than just that little notch that points to a repop.

That is reproduction cover. There is so much misinformation out there on W27s. Sadly, the first repros are passed off as real units.

Question: Do these fit the Type O diff, or only the "corporate" diff?

They had two covers. One for the “O” type and the other for the 10 bolt corporate diff.

My reproduction dates back to the early 80s. It has the little droop notch.

That would be correct. Unfortunately, the early covers are passed off as real covers. The early covers were actually made in the U.S.

Seems like there is still a possibility I could be rich if I find the right buyer?

Maybe not rich but the early ones are more desirable than the new repops.

Even with the dissapointment of not owning the original just the simple fact that the early reproductions are made in the USA and actually well made except for the "cry drop" should be appreciated. The new reproductions are simply horribly made by any comparison to the initial reproduction cover. Use it or lose it.

First of all you will not get rich either way but most importantly it's one thing to sell something in good faith and it is another to sell in bad faith. If you know it's a good reproduction sell it as just that because sell a reproduction as "the real thing" would show zero integrity and zero honesty. Sure they are suckers born every minute but that doesnt mean that you should take advantage of them either. Think about your "Legacy".

This cover is for a 12 Chevy. The cooling fins are removed to clear the larger ring gear.
