w-30 F heads

was wondering what the performance difference was between a set of 1970 E heads and a set of F heads both stock on a stock 455? also what is a fair price to pay for a good set of F heads in todays market.

I'd say there will be very little difference for you, the only real difference is the size of the valves and without a new camshaft it wouldn't matter much. With F heads coming in over typically over 3k even in this crud market I wouldn't bother unless you have a W30 and someone took them off years ago. I'd port your E heads or get some aluminum heads. Leave the W30 heads for guys with W30s trying to get it back to Matching numbers.

At the Olds Nat meet in Reno, I sold a set, for 3K, had lots of interested, think I could of got more, but a lot of the guys interested were from the east coast, so trying to pack and pay shipping, made it a tough on a lot of guys. If you don't have a W30, I would use the E heads they will work great.

Careful now, there are 2 versions of E heads. 442's (and maybe toro's) E heads had the 2.07" intake valve. All the others had 2.00" intake valves. I think that F's have more intake port volume?

Are you saying that guys who were willing to fork out $3,000 cash were balking at paying an additional $100 for shipping on an item that's very hard to find?
That's just weird.
Sometimes it's hard to figure people out...

these were at 2k for 3 or 4 days and then in the last hour or so went up a grand, sold for just over 3k - even in this market people are willing to spend - that's a fair price but still a lot for something that adds next to no performance

There is only one version of the E head casting. All E castings can be machined for the 2.070" intakes.

so port layout/volume is the same on all E heads? also did the 442 E head come with the big valves or are all E heads small valve? thanks

Yes, all 1970 442s got big valves, as did all Toros that year.

Eric, what you say makes sence. The big problem, most did not have a car, and I did not know the area, and where UPS or FedEx were, and who was going to package them up to ship. I also was no help as I did not the locations in Reno. At that point, most thought it wasn't worth the extra work, and I could understand their concern. You are correct in that the person who really want and bought lived in Washington, and he figured it out.

Weird, Harv.

If I were looking for hard to find parts and willing to shell out big bucks for them, and had flown in to the meet where they were being sold, I think I'd be willing to take a cruise in the rental car to the nearest "Ship-n-Save" shop on my way to the airport and ship 'em home myself.

Just weird.
