Upgrade Fan / Fan Shroud?
Upgrade Fan / Fan Shroud?
I'm replacing the water pump on my stock non AC '67 VC., w/ 330. It has the ( original?) 4 blade fan with spacer. It seems straight, no visible signs of of damage.
There is no fan shroud, that's something I'd like to address. Is there a shroud that will fit my application and then go with a better fan also?
Thank you,
Ed

Be aware Hayden has a full line of thermostatic clutches with varying lengths and temperature cut in points. As I recall they have standard, heavy duty and maybe even a severe duty series of fan clutches to put behind a new fan which will help keep your car cool.
In case you can’t find a ‘67 shroud, there is a possibility that the ‘66 shroud will bolt up. I don’t know about 66 vs. 67 Cutlass shroud mounting points, but I do know that Olds only made 1 shroud for Cutlasses and Big Cars in 1966.
One warning. I’ve been running Hayden fan clutches for a decade or more, but the last one I got was bad out of the box. It was replaced with an AC/Delco unit which works o.k.
Your cooling may be helped by all manner of science including the front curtains (kind of a rubber front shroud) that Olds used. Also there is a pretty wide variety of recipes on what coolant to use, whether to use Photofow/Water Wetter, what % of Anti-Freeze to use. In & amongst all that that spirited debate, the one thing people seem to agree on using distilled water in your radiator, not garden hose water.

I see the '67 shrouds are around $100 more than the '68's
Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried fitting a '68 and up shroud?
I could be wrong, but are the '67 and '68 radiators basically the same?

I’m a little limited on ‘65 Cutlass/442’s, but can say with confidence that Olds only made 1 shroud for 1966. It should fit well in your A body because they were too cheap to make a bigger one for the big cars. You might get a 67 or later one to fit, but aim at the 65-66 for easiest install with minimal, if any, need for trimming.
I’d recommend a 7 blade clutch fan since they pull more air across the core than the factory 4 blade.
I really came here to say that I very highly recommend the masticated rubber “front curtains” that Olds used in ‘66. And maybe ‘65. More or less these curtains stopped air from going around/over/under the radiator core by blocking the incoming airflow from going _anywhere_ but across the core where the cool air does it’s most good. For all intents & purposes these “curtains” acted as a “front shroud”. In my cars they help a lot in 2025 with our lower octane alcohol gas and warmer climate….
Best shrouds I ever saw for the ‘60’s Olds were the 68 or 69 Toro shrouds. They covered the entire rear of the (33”?) 445 radiator core and ducted the air to the 7 blade fans.
If I were going to do parades, that’s what I’d do here in CA on warm summer days. Good luck, hope some of these tips work for you.
Cheers

The '66 shroud doesn't amount to much. Its very shallow and doesn't cover the entire radiator. I would opt for the seven blade clutch fan close to the radiator without the shroud. Pair that with a Cold Case radiator and it should be fine. Of course I like the twin 14 inch Spal electric fans best of all but that's me.
If parts are manufactured and assembled uniformly, why would you need to balance them ? I think most of the load water pump seals and bearings is from V belt over tensioning.
I don't know if it was factory or not but my car had a 2" spacer on it when I bought it and I went to a 3" spacer. I've put on about 5,700 miles, so far, and no issue with the longer spacer. I'm still using the factory 4 blade fan.
