Trunk Lid Lock Question

I just bought a 71 cutlass convertible and the previous owner did not have the key to the trunk. Other than a locksmith, anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the trunk open so I can remove it as it is all rusted out.

Thanks

If it's all rusted out cut an access hole in it & open it from the inside

From behind the back seat you can take the well cover off and stick something in the trunk key sloot similar to a flat screwdriver. Needs to de about 3 feet long. Just turn the mechanism counter clockwise a quarter turn and the trunk should pop.

I've done what zeeke suggested several times and it works well. Remove the rear seat, tape a screwdriver to a broom handle or use about 4' of extensions on a ratchet. You can either put a screwdriver blade into the slot next to the flat rod on the lock and rotate it. Or use a 7/16" socket (I think that's the right size!) and remove the three bolts that hold the latch to the deck lid. Either way will open the trunk. John

Another option...

Look at the lock cylinder in the glove box or a door. Either should have a code written on it. Go to your locksmith and get a new key cut using the code (you need a key anyway, so no waste of money).

If you don't know the locksmith, they may ask for the physical cylinder before they will cut a key.

It's worth a look but as an example, my car has 3 out of 4 different cylinders in each location. This car was definitely a Frankin-Cutlass. Motor, deck lid & glove box off a 70', radiator support off a 72' Have a new set but time goes towards other things on the project.

In the meantime you could do both pop the trunk then get new cylinder to match the doors.

Would have to be either glove box or console as the door and ignition keys are the same. Trunk, glove box, and console are a different key.

finally was able to cut the rust holding in the lock which I then slid out and stuck a screwdriver into the hole and popped open the trunk lid. Now I just have to find a replacement and put it back together.

Thanks for everyone's help.
