Trouble with Ignition Lock

Hello all,

I have always had trouble with the ignition lock set on my black 71 442. The key does not go in the slot easily and unless you make sure it's in all the way it won't turn to be able to put the switch in run or start positions, like the key is not hitting the cylinders properly. I used the lock set that was original to the car when I installed a tilt steering column years ago. Honestly cannot remember if I had the same issue with the standard steering column. It's been so long ago. One thing I did notice is the lock set does not appear to be snug against the steering column. Like there's about a 1/4" gap between the chrome lock set and the black on the column. Any suggestions on how to fix or things to look for to diagnose?

I would try a new key cut to the code. There's a member here who can do that for you. Worn keys present weird problems.

What did the column come out of? Some lock sets are held in place with a locking tab, others use a special bolt. Maybe there is some interference or something isn’t compatible? I had to make some minor modifications to the column (late 80s B body car) to make my original 69 lock set fit. I don’t remember exactly what I had to do, but I know it wasn’t a big deal.

The tilt column came out of of 71 Cutlass auto floor shift car. So it should be the same.

Sounds like it could be the key. Only got one key with it and it was worn pretty bad. How do I find the key code?

Get graphite (powdered) lube and spray in the lock cylinder. The tumblers are probably sticky.
