Transmission woes again!
Transmission woes again!
Hi Guys,
So when I rebuilt my 68 442 engine I had the transmission rebuilt by a local trans shop. The trans blew apart with less then 2000 mile on it. I brought it back and they rebuilt it. Today while driving it I was manually shifting it (dreaming of a 4 speed) when It wouldn't go back in to drive. I could downshift to first but no drive. Pulled over, pushed on it a few times and no luck. I limped it home in second gear and while driving it it went back into drive. Drove it home and pulled in the drive way. It will go into neutral if you hold it but reverse and park isn't an option. WTF????
Any suggestions what it might be going on so I can yell at the trans shop and sound somewhat knowledgable????
Thanks!
Craig

Why even bother? Just tell them what was happening and let them figure it out as they are (supposedly) the experts. I had issues after my TH350 was rebuilt and I described the problems I was experiencing and the shop was able to diagnose the problem based on the information I gave them about the way it was operating.
well just why won't it go in reverse or park??is the shifter not letting it?if so i would say you have a cable or linkage issue at the trans.
If Im reading this correctly it sounds like the shift linkage either in the car or in the trans. Split the dictionary. Disconnect the shift cable/linkage and move the selector on the trans. Does it shift? Yes then start digging into the shift mechanism inside the car...the shifter the cable or the linkage. If it wont shift at the trans then something is wrong with the detent inside the trans. Pull the pan and inspect. Could be deeper in the valve body but this is a good start. Unless you believe its a hydraulic problem then yes out comes the trans, but only after reading the line pressures.
www.monstertransmission.com Just put one of their units in my 69 Chevelle. Great price, great warranty, free shipping, no core charge, torque converter included. Each unit installed in a vehicle and tested before shipping !
