Tire question?
#2
1971 would have been bias-belted tires, probably a G78-14 or G70-14 on the ragtop. Whitewall would have been a double white pinstripe. You could probably have gotten white letter tires by then, though they didn't really take off till the mid-70s.
Uniroyal, Goodyear, General and Firestone are the tire brands I can say with some certainty came on 71's.

i see a lot of restorations with firestone wide ovals. i also see many gto's and chevelles with redlines. were they a mid 60's tire or were they still in use during the early 70's. thanks for all the help so far. jake

Wide ovals were late 60's to early 70's.Goodyear wide ovals were better looking and performed better as far as traction and wear. There were probably more redlines on GTO's than any other car for some unknown reason.(I did put redlines on my 67 Nova and they looked sharp.)If I ever get my Cutlass on the road, it'll ride on Goodyear RWL polyglass wide ovals.

The last year for availability of the redline I believe was 1969, when the white letter tires became on option for the Oldsmobiles. This was by going through the Assembly manual and checking the tire charts. The 3/8" white wall and double white as I show, where still popular in the early '70's.
