Thought it blew up!
Hey fellas, I haven't posted in
a few days, kinda down in the dumps
about the 400 E block coming apart.
I got a friend over this morning to pull the engine,
and came to find it was only the harmonic
balancer that blew apart. When I heard it
at about 35 mph pulling a small hill in town,
it sounded like a broke crank or a rod had come
loose. Shut it down, got my neighbor to tow it
home with my truck, and got on it today, whew!
Now onto my question, I have a used harmonic for
a 70 455 and one for a 67 330. Can I use the one
for the 455 to replace the one for the 400 E block?
I was farily sure the 330 one wouldn't work, but I need
your input guys. Thanks as always, Adam.

Do yourself a favor and purchase a new fluid damper. A used OEM will likely do the same thing. People dont realize these are wear items and should be replaced periodically. You could get a new OEM but the fluid dampers are nice if you have a few extra pennies.

Quick update guys. send my bud up
to the store for another 12, you know.
I am going to use the h/b from my son's
old engine, 66 330 4 bbl. out of his Cutlass.
As Henry shared, same part. Bead blasted
and painted using Tamraz crappy Olds bronze.
It was left over from the 69 455 rebuild for the
stalled 442 project.
If I can keep my dadgum foot out of it,
I can make that 48 yr. old rubber last a
while longer. Untill I can figure out which
new one to order. Thanks for the comments
guys. Here's a few pics...

Professional Products Balancer
Do yourself & pull it off & throw it away. Mine lasted less than 100 passes down the quarter mile before it spun on the rubber. Never again.

Adam, the same thing happened to me when I lived in Richardson. I was driving my sons 67 442 and all hell broke loose. I shut it down and pulled off on a side street to look at what happened. Luckily there was no damage, like yours all it did was ring around on the hub. After I got another one on it, It had a very weird hum sounding like it was from the engine. Never could find the source. Completely went through the engine with new parts, still hummed. Just decided to live with it. Years later I had to replace the heater core and guess what. no hum. Still a mystery to me what caused it.
