friend's 71 442 W30 blew something last night

(70 455)

in the cooling system, on the highway at about 75-80 miles per hour, coolant sprayed out from under the car heavily while temp jumped to H

rebuilt 455, A/C, this may be the second time if a freeze plug again

new water pump, new 4 core rad, fan clutch, overflow bottle

radiator cap was loose after all this

car usually runs at halfway on temp guage, over 65 is 3/4, 75 plus over 3/4

where should he look 1st???

If he has a new 4 row radiator then he should not be overheating at 75mph? I just put a new 4 row in mine and at 100 mph it doesn't hit 200. At 75-70 on the highway it was around 190 so I would think he may have a problem maybe with circulation?

Since you are from Florida maybe the outdoor temp was high? Even so 75mph it should not run at 3/4 .

I am kind of wondering about the rad cap being loose after this? No matter what you would have blown in the motor it would not have loosened the rad cap. maybe the rad cap is an old one and does not seal tightly and that is the problem or maybe he did not have it put on all the way properly and that is why it is loose. Absolutely you should check the easy fixes first. Just gotta clean up the motor and fill up the rad with water first to check it out. Water is a lot easier to clean up if there is a major leak. make sure that rad cap seals properly and try it again. Also check out the oil beforehand to see if there was any mixing with antifreeze. if everything looks ok then start it up and let it idle til it's hot. My old rad used to get hot at idle and that's why I got the 4 row cause now it will idle without overheating.

thanks all, I am not getting notifications from the forum anymore, not sure why. The car is in line at the shop to get looked at this a.m. I hear the fan is compromised somehow. Will know more later.

had the wrong fan (replaced) the wrong rad support (leans, not replaced yet) and runs 25% cooler. The freeze plugs may not have been installed right upon rebuild, this is the 2nd to pop. Supposedly a hose should go 1st.
