Is it a sacrilege not to paint an Olds engine Gold. I'm thinking more like a bright red.

 

Oh Boy....You went and did it now. To me its not a big deal. I like to see an engine that is the original color, Oldsmobile gold or blue, Chevy orange, Ford blue...I am seeing more and more guys that are painting the engine the same color as the car which is fine, it is your car do what you want and what makes you happy.

 

Some Olds engines were red.

I'll probably be banned from the board for admitting this but here goes. Years ago I wanted a matching color engine for my flame orange cutlass. I was a low buck,low tech guy so I painted it che..cough..vy orange

I would never do this today,I am older and have learned from my straying ways...somewhat.

I think most will agree that if it has pink parts that you have to prime to get warm and perform its going to coast you more time money and frustration.t I like OLDS BLUE with aluminum intake had heads I like how the blue looks with the red fender wells also.

 

Oldsmobile had red engines?
Use invisible paint, it would be cool to be able to see all the internal parts.
Just don't paint the fan blade with invisible paint unless you want a colorful nickname.

Some 394s, 425s, 455s were red. I've heard that <gasp> Ford red is close. Vance Brady painted his Olds race engines black, so the Rund re-creation engine is black. OEM engines in the 1980s from different mfg. were black, supposedly to help hide oil leaks.

 

The only rule is that you can't paint it Chebby orange.

To my horror , as I scraped the sludge off the side of the motor long after I bought my 72 CS , I found that someone painted the motor orange to match the original color of the car.

 

It's called personalization, and I've seen alot of motors painted all kinds of colors. My point is that the only one you need to please... is well ummm... You!!!! Isay go for it!

 

You can paint it any non-Olds color you want... but we are obligated to hunt you down though.

It's outlined on something like page 115, subsection 3(b) of the unofficial Olds Etiquette Guide.

 

Never thought of blue maybe that will work.

If there is such a rule, it sure aint the "golden rule".

Paint it whatever you want. Even if the engine is supposed to be gold, someone will inevitably tell you how the shade you used is off.

But Olds Gold is soooooo beautiful! Anything but Chebby orange. Nope... nope.. nope.

 

When I did my first build-up years ago, I painted mine red...mainly so I could detail it with similarly-colored accessories. I'm getting ready to start rebuilding it again, and it'll be painted the same color.

 

My car is going red so i was going to paint my engine red. when i told me dad that i thought he was going to kill me. lol he was telling me that if i painted it red my car would be a mutt.

 

I do not like the gold...so what color is my engine? Gold Simple question of whether or not an individual has the mental fortitude to fight off the "orginality" angel wispering in his ear, or the "personal taste" angel. Obviously, show car people who live to win trophies keep their cars original--down to the minutest detail. As has been said many times before, "it's your car, do what you want." Oh, and don't feel guilty doing it.

Just for the record, my car is an everyday driver, therefore not a show car. I simply just could not fend off the "personal taste" angel, thus my engine is the original color. Maybe I should just drop in a 455..I love the blue.

 

I'm partial to red. But that's what came on my 455!

There is actually a thread on here debating the various brands of 455 Metallic Blue Engine paint... I want to say that pretty much every option had been deemed as "Close, but not the correct shade..."

FWIW I don't care for the gold color too much, but I won't have to worry about it with my 455

 

A properly built engine in the wrong colour is much better than a smokey dog in immaculate original colour IMO.
I sold a Cutlass wagon to a friend who decided to turn it into a delivery van, should he post pics of the car or his slow and painful death?.

LOL, I remember seeing a movie where this girl had a car that was painted plaid to match her clothes. OK, I'm definately not about to do that, but up to you.

Mine is red but it is supposed to be. 68 455.

 

In the early 1980's I rebuilt/resto-rodded my first Oldsmobile. It was a 1970 Cutlass Supreme that I save from the crusher with a $50 bill. Before I got done the only parts that were from the original car were the shell and the frame. Everything was Oldsmobile, but I collected parts from a couple dozen different cars. I added a 1971 front clip as I found an 71-72 OAI hood. I also added a rear spoiler from a dead Rallye 350 I'd found. I was half way through the project before I learned the Cutlass Supreme wasn't the same body style as a 442, but I was having fun. I painted the car Ferd Grabber blue (Man was that bright!), used Caddy Red for the 455 and got lots of complements. If it were a 442 or a Hurst Olds with the original drivetrain I'd want to keep it as original as possible. But on the other hand there was nothing I did that couldn't have been put back to original some day. So all that to say... if you want a red engine go ahead and do it!

 

When I got my '69 it had a bronze 350 in it that I traded for a blue 455 that I painted red. Full circle.
