stock/am/fm radio
The 1970 AM-FM radio is a two piece unit, with one of it's sections mounted above the glove box liner. They are connected by a thick cable. The 1971 radio is a one piece unit. A much tidier set up. As you said, they look indentical when mounted.
Rocketbrian, not to be a jerk, but there were actually 3 radios available for 1970-72. AM, AM-FM, & AM-FM stereo. In 1970 only, the AM-FM stereo did have a separate amplifier attached by a large cable that was mounted above the glove box. In '71-'72, that amp was incorporated into the radio & was a one piece unit. The AM & AM-FMs were the same from '70-'72 & as you said they all mount & look the same once installed. I believe all of these radios could be had with a front only, or a front & rear speaker with a fader control behind the tuner ****. Obviously the stereo radios had the two speaker set up. Hope this helps.

I believe the 70 radio will have a different AM/FM slide bar than the 71/72, and will have both AM/FM numbers visible like the pre 70's. If you have the monaural AM/FM there will be no 'Stereo' lable on the FM indicator. For the Stereo radios, when you lock into a stereo channel, a red light will come on.
Also don't forget these radios could all be hooked up to the 8 track that was mounted under the center dash!
