I am sure I'll have many questions, but to start I am having trouble removing the ignition lock assembly.
I have the CSM and it appears I should be able to push the brass tab shown at 9:00 in the pic.
I don't have the key to turn to the accessories position as noted in the CSM.
Thoughts?
I think I found the proper key at one point but the switch wouldn't turn, is it possible it's froze up and needs some heavy persuasion?
You don't press any "brass tab". That tab is the contact for the key-in-the-lock buzzer. You need to pull that whole contact assembly out first. Grab the plastic housing with a needle nose pliers.
Once that is removed, you have to insert the screwdriver through the casting to depress the spring-loaded tab on the lock cylinder itself. The slot is frequently covered with casting flash, as shown by the rectangular depression at the red arrow. It's very thin. You just push right through it.
Once you push through that casting flash, you need to depress this spring-loaded tab and hold it in while you pull out on the lock cylinder.
Thanks, Joe.
I saw an article that something might be in the way so I started picking at it last night to no avail.
With a fresh start, I decided to try to see if the deeper spot by the screw hole was also thin.
A few minutes later I had the lock cylinder assembly out.
The pic below shows the two spots that I tried the one to the right of the screw hole was the winner.
you can see the scratches at the end where the first hole aligned with

2. Looks like the bearings are very expensive.
(upper bearing clean and pack in place?) or remove the bearing and plastic gear blast and paint? didn't look easy to remove the plastic gear.
3. what parts should be left unpainted?
