SSI wheel restoration?

Who and where can I have a set of SSI wheels restored? I have a set that has nice lug holes but the chrome spokes are dull on a couple of them.

Can you post a pic of the dull chrome?

Eric, the spokes are supposed to be a satin chrome. The rim is polished. Apparently the black paint would not adhere to a polished chrome center, so they went to a rougher texture for the center.

The SS1 spokes have a type of chrome on them are called Flash Chrome. The process is different than regular chrome.

That is why the spokes are not really shiny.

I looked for years to find a vendor that could reproduce the finish, with no luck.

And, you would have to cut the center out to re-do it, then reattached to the rim.

I've redone a couple sets that have held up well over a decade and 10K miles of summer driving. Sanding (by hand and with tools), a light primer coat, satin black paint and masking tape and a razor blade for cleanup got nice results. Some parts vendors even sell pre-cut masking kits for the spokes now.

I used duct tape to cover the spokes, and trimmed with an Xacto knife.

A light bead blast with Black beauty at 100 PSI.

Wipe down with wax and grease remover.

2 light coats of self etching primer.

2 Light coats of Eastwood Rally Wheel paint.

Hello all,

Can anyone tell me where to find the pre-cut masking kits for the spokes, mentioned above in this thread? I want to restore a set of SSI wheels.

Thank you,

John

Masking kit

For what it's worth, I tried one of these pre-cut kits and spent more time trying to line up the cut-outs than I would have just masking off with tape and trimming with razor blade. There is a nice edge for the blade so there is no free-hand work. Just my experience, I'm sure others will differ. This was just using blue painters tape.

I agree with Scott. I ended up just taping them off myself and cut like Scott is saying

How is this "100%" factory wheel so different than a good restored wheel?

Hopefully not much different, but my wheels are not 100%. They are a little rusty and could use some fresh black paint.
