Squealing water pump

I was hoping someone can help me with a problem I am having with my water pump.About 2 weeks ago my motor started to run hot.I had 2 mechanics come by and they said they thought it was a bad water pump.My motor has just been rebuilt with less than 500 miles on it. So I took it off and ordered one just like it from Mondellos. I installed it myself a couple of days later. I topped off the fluids and got it up to temp with no problems.Today I started it up and it started this metal on metal quealing and it sounds terrible. When I took the last water pump off it also had markes on the housing from the impeller scraping. .What is causing this to happen.? I am using a high flow aluminum water pump. The is on a 455 Toronado. Please help

Does it have a stamped or cast impeller? My be it came loose, or was not pressed all the way on, and is hitting the back plate?

The one I took off was rubbing inside the pump housing. Its almost like something is bending the impeller causing it to be off balance and rub against the metal.I dont know if its cast or not.The housing is aluminum and the impellar on the first one I took off started to have surface rust on it.

How tight are you putting on the belts?

Why did you need to go with high flow aluminum water pump? If you have the right pulleys for the stock 455, it should work just fine with a stock water pump.

Another thing - aside from what Koda questioned. If the belts are slipping in the pulleys they will also squeal.

Those water pumps should come with a couple gaskets with different thickness. Is the impeller rubbing the timing cover? You have to test fit those pumps to see what gasket you need.

The belt is on correct and its not slipping. Its a grinding sound. The only part of this motor is original is the block.I purchased everything from Mondellos.I am using there bracket system and thats the water pump it calls for. I had the other one on it for a a few months. Now this one didnt last until I could drive it around the block. All the belts and pulleys line up.

It only came with one gasket. It works for a while then starts grinding then stops then starts again.

The one I took off is rubbing the housing not the timing belt cover.

With all due respect to Allan, I was assuming you put the belt on too tight and were killing the bearings and canting the shaft.

Try one more water pump
if it is that new, then it's warrantied?

If that does not work, I dunno, factory parts seem to be pretty effective and long lasting

depending on what "Mondello" you purchased it from that may be the problem. Sounds like the bearing could be junk from the get go if you believe you dont have the belts to tight. Warranty/Replacement I hope?

I found a place on the internet that rebuilds water pumps. They say when they finish with it it will be better than new.I know this is a new water pump but they might replace the poor quality bearings and fix my problem.I know I should not have to do this but I would rather know its fixed rite and will last.

Sounds like the bearing is the culprit. Not usually DOA. I would ask for a replacement pump.

I would go the warranty route, it will take less time and your not out the added expense. Or you can just go to your local speed shop or parts store and get another.

Have you taken the belts off and turned the pump/fan by hand? Maybe the fan hitting shroud or pulley hitting pump housing, fan clutch etc

No I haven't. Thats a good idea. I will try that and see what happens.Since this is the second pump to go bad I will get Mondellos to replace it and hope the third time is a charm.

Just an update on my water pump. Well I took the water pump off.It looked fine internally. So I called my buddy over and we started the motor and Low and Behold we heard the sound again! It was the starter hitting the fly wheel. So I installed the water pump back on and am going back to the Original Starter..The high torque mini starter sound terrible when it engages. Since I took it to be sure it was shimmed correctly it has started not fully retracting so its making the squeaking noise.Positive side is I can remove and re-install the water pump in the dark.Lol

Amazing how sound travels around in an engine compartment. Glad you got it sorted out.

I purchased both of the pumps from Mondellos . The first one was defective but I had it on there for a year before it failed. So I just purchased another one from them. After I took the water pump off thinking it was defective like the other one, and finding out that it was not the problem,I reinstalled it.Worked great since it was the starter hitting the flywheel. So I did not receive 2 extra pumps but I did purchase 2 pump.
