Speedometer reading really high

I just drove down my neighborhood (going between 25-40mph) and hear a loud rattle coming from my dash. I looked at the speedo and noticed it was reading really high reading about 2x the speed I was going. Any ideas why this is happening? I'm worried getting on the freeway that it might break it even worst. Thanks in advance...

Well, if you need to do freeway driving and are concerned something will break even "worst", then disconnect the speedo cable at the transmission. It's a simple task to unscrew the lock collar and remove the cable end from the trans speedo housing.

My speedometer is reading 10 MPH higher just all of a sudden? But i had no noise at all. I have replaced the cable 3 years ago.
