Interesting question. I can certainly see that for the Canadian exports. It would follow logically that it would also apply to other states not regulated by Kally four nya emissions. Now it brings up the question: Did only Freemont have 'Bypass' code on their build sheet, or was it also on others?

The interesting thing is that the interior , as far as I can tell, was gold with white accents , headrests, console, arm rests both front and back and the rubber around the rearview mirror.

In '80, I boughtr a '69 442 coupe with buckets, console and air.
Blue with a 3-tone blue interior, which were the same 3 colors on a '65 Jetstar I I owned for a while.
Never saw another with those colors, and never thought about checking the interior codes on either cars.
After looking through some of the catalogs for seat covers on other cars, haven't seen those colors available.
Anyone know what option either car had?

Way cool
Ted Y68 is regular paint used with trim combinations not recommended by the paint and trim specifications chart. So this means it would've been "specially ordered" with the gold interior that wasn't one of the recommended interior colors with the actual original exterior color combination.

GAO - that pic is about the same colors, but in the 65 big car pattern on the J-I, but on the 442, there were 3 different colors on the bottom cushion alone. When I got it, there was a tear on the bottom outside panel that the interior shop said to find a 'used' piece, as they could only order a minimium of 3 sq. yards = expensive!
I don't remember where I found it, but I brought them the seat - 1 day + $25. Back in '80

I'm a little late to the party on this thread but here is a 69 442 convertible with Special Order Nugget Gold which is paint code 03. I don't think there were many Cutlass body cars in 69 that received this color. I'm restoring the car for someone and it came to me painted blue. In looking at the cowl tag and seeing 03 for the paint code, I dug out a few books and found it was Nugget Gold and that it was available as a Special Order only since it was a standard Toronado color that year. I did a little investigating and washed some of the paint off of the A posts and sure enough, they were originally gold. As a result, the car was painted Nugget Gold and its a great looking color. Not yet complete but hope to have it done this fall.

Nice work on the body and paint! That car is going to look amazing. Looks like you are a stickler for detail, right down to the right color for the SSII wheels. Do you have a build thread on this beast you're restoring?
#133
Thanks Allan. I haven't gotten to the wheels yet and they aren't as nice as they appear. But when done, they will be painted the correct color along with a set of reproduction redwall tires.
I haven't put together a thread on this but I've kicked the idea around a little. It would take some time to show everything and the car does not belong to me. I'm sure the owner wouldn't mind so maybe I should just start posting away. I know the rebuild threads get a lot of interest so maybe I'll just start one. I have close to 600 photos of the work so far but I would have to post much less than that to keep the time investment down.

Perfect!
Brian, thank you in advance. I know how much time and effort it takes to put the thread together with pics/descriptions. I'm pretty sure everyone will appreciate the dedication you've put into that build. 600 photos? Maybe the ones you don't post you could put a link to a web host like Photobucket or something?
#135
Thanks for that link and photo. I wasn't aware that Nugget Gold was also an optional color on the Toronado and at extra cost. Because I really haven't seen this specific color in the past, I wondered how close the color was that I used when I pained the 442. I called and spoke to PPG to confirm everything before I bought the paint and by the color of the Toronado in the picture, I would say it's just about dead on.
There was a thread about a year ago that I caught where the talk ended up on this color and the fact that it was available on a Cutlass body car as a special order but it seemed no one had run across one that could be documented. I responded with the cowl tag and photo and it seemed to get a few people's attention. I have to believe there were very few 1969 Cutlass/442's done in this color from the factory. Always cool to come across things like this.
I think I will go ahead and start a rebuild thread on this car and show the work to date. I think it will be pretty interesting. I'll try to get that started some time this weekend.

Sorry for the different tangent! 1st pic, 841 Ford with traction tire up front? FWA? must be aftermarket if so. 4 speed trans, looks like a gas burner?
Looks like both 442 and 841 are nicely restored. I work for a Ford/ New Holland dealer.

Special #1 from Olds Car Show
Scot, I have 3 cars to show you which I believe fall into the 'special order' category.
First, here's a 1973 Olds Delta 88 vert. Funny thing when I asked the owner what kind of power it had she said 350. When I got her to pop the hood so I could shoot the cowl tag I saw this monstrous big blue block. I looked at her and said, "You got a 455 there". She wouldn't believe me. I pointed out her U code in the VIN, and showed her the engine casting. She was pissed! Ready for this? Because she had just ordered Rocket 350 decals for the air cleaner!
Her car has "SPECIAL" paint. No bout a doubt it. Check the cowl tag. This is the FIRST car I've seen where the PNT code was actually stamped "SPECIAL" next to the A for vert top color.
It's 1973 Omega Yellow - not available on 73 Deltas that year.
A very well optioned car too!

Special #2 from Olds Car Show
Here's something you don't see every day. Well maybe the body of the car you might. But this one is SPECIAL. According to the owner, he has docs on the car, and even if he doesn't find them, there's something SPECIAL about this car no matter how you slice the pie.
This 1965 442 is an original 4 speed/bucket seat car alleged by owner to have a "POLICE APPREHENDER OPTION" from the factory.
The owner allowed me to sit in the car to take the next 2 shots. Note: the dash has NO PNDLR 'window' anywhere because it's a 4 speed.
Now I believe that these cars had to be Special Ordered for service as a police car. Note the nice speedo with the Certified Police Speedometer still in plain site?
There's story behind the engine too. The original was blown while it was in service. A replacement was installed and had heads done by Joe Mondello himself. Back in the day obviously. Owner has paperwork on that too.
The MSD and other mods have been done just for improved reliability.

Special #3 from Olds Car Show
The third car that I can truly document through pics is this 1970 442 W30. The car is in fantastic shape and still wears its ORIGINAL paint.
The car shows very well in the pic but along the ridges of the fender and other places, the paint has worn down a lot. This car is entirely original and has never been wrecked or modified according to the owner; and she's had it forever. She and her husband operate 2 repair shops.
In 1970 Rallye Red was a special order color for 442/Cutlass. I asked Denise to pop the hood so I could get a shot of the cowl tag. Sure enough the PNT code shows -- and the vinyl top is listed as A. Lansing car verifies the W30 component of the 442.
I looked up the TRM code of 937 and it matches the Ivory interior. Not unusual to have black stripes with the white top/ivory interior. Sure wish Lansing had left more paperwork in the cars to validate all the little details. ANYWAY, the cowl tag confirms this car has SPECIAL ORDER at extra cost status with the paint.

special order cars
Back in 1969 I ordered a Cutlass S. I didn't want the crome on the fenders and doors. I just didn't like the looks of it. They built the car the way that I wanted it. I would put some pictures of it on here but, in 1976 I got divorced and she took all my pictures with her. Along with all my money. So I can't prove that it came that way. But a few years ago. I was talking with a gentleman that had worked for GM. And he said back in the day if you wanted a red car with a blue interior they would build it. So with that I guess anything back then was possible.

Yes there was a police brochure for 65, but it was NOT applied to 442s. Does anyone know how easy it is to swap speedo heads into a 65? That car has so many things wrong with it that Id bet my car that the speedo has been changed. Notice the dash is the color if the car? Dash unit has been out of the car before because the metal dash was black originally.
No PRNDL is not a big deal, all floor shift cars have this dash. The rare 442 dash IS the one with PRNDL, only used with column shift cars.

Correct.
That car proves nothing. With so many things not original, how can we say for certain that the speedo is too? I see a hardware store rivet in the engine photo, holding the cowl tag on. Tells me its been off or swapped. So this car may be a police apprehender Cutlass with a swapped on 442 cowl tag.
Only thing I see that is certified is the speedo is a police unit. Where it came from and what its in now is anyones guess.

All W30s were built in Lansing but not all 442s built in Lansing were W30s.
