Give yourself time. As you embark into the working world you'll have to develop it to survive. I have become a master of the cheap shot as I've gotten older and I also don't really worry about pissing someone off anymore. Hey, they fire the first shot, I've got a cannon at the ready.

I once had a guy at a car show try to buy the power antenna right off my car and when I told him not for sale he started to argue with me about how my car wasn't good enough for a power antenna and I was being an *** because he needed one for his car!
I had a guy do the same thing about my Toronado's rear bumper. Yes, it is a 1968 W34 bumper on a 1969 car, and he was always in my face over that because he wanted that bumper bad- to put on a non-W 68 Toronado wtf?

How do you deal with someone like that!!!
I finally told him I would sell the bumper for $12k. His shocked look prompted the comment "an OCA National winner 69 Toronado comes with it". I think he realised then the bumper was staying with the car. Steve, you should have asked him if his car came with power antenna and if not tell him "Mine did. It stays."

Logan, never mind the jerks. They're everywhere though I've noticed people from Rust Belt states tend to be the worst. Not saying we don't have them here in the sunny South, because believe me we do. Enjoy your 68 and continue improving it. You've struck me as someone who enjoys learning about his car.

A lot of these arrogant shmoes fail to realise that total perfection was not the factory's goal when the cars were built. Getting them out the door and sold with as little warranty work as possible was. GTO guys are the worst about that in my experience. Actually knew one who lost sleep because his car did not have every available option. He was obsessed with it.

Like all of the other posts - don't lose any sleep over it. It is your car and I am sure that it will look great when finished (looks pretty good now!). Hang in there.

On the flip side, sometimes you can learn some things. One thing I will do is to walk off and see other cars. Tag along with a group of fellows as they head back by your car, and just listen to what they are saying to each other about it.

I've never seen those rims before! I've only seen two 68 442s outside of my own in the wild, and outside of researching what belongs on my car, I don't know nearly all of the options that were available on these cars. What are those rims called?

What's the paint color?

Beautiful ride!

Thanks for the info. So are they just like steel wheels with 'wire wheel' covers?

Yup, and the steelies have the correct offset for the dual piston disc brakes that the car came with(option, J52 RPO code)
The color is paint code G, willow gold.
the headrests were also an option,A81 for this year.
It also has the front shoulder harnessAS1, custom sport steering wheel N34,
front and rear floor mats, floor console,THM400 tranny, power steering, red stripe tire F70 14 4 radial, option PW8courtesy light package, am push button radio, second speaker in the rear...... I have the original 400, but pulled it and replaced with a 455

what options came on your car?

I have never found the build sheet on it unfortunately :/

So I don't know exactly what trim pieces are original or not, such as the sport steering wheel and the rally wheels.

It originally had a TH400 trans, but was swapped out by someone who owned it prior for a TH350. I'll be taking that out in favor of a Muncie 4 speed as I have no hope of finding the original TH400 anyway.

The 400 G Block and Type-O Posi Rear-end are numbers matching with the car.

Cowl has my car listed with Jade-Gold as the original color. But I can't stand that green color. It's not my style. Plus, since I'll never have a 'perfect' numbers matching car due to the lost tranny, I thought I'd go with what myself and the wife liked best.

It has black interior. No w-36 stripe.

Eventually I will crate the original motor so I don't blow it up a second time. I haven't decided yet though what it'll be replaced with.

I would love to find the build sheet for this car.

I've had very little negative responses considering the length of time I have had the car on the road and at shows but then again it's not a muscle car and it sure isn't fast so the over dosed testerone types aren't intimidated by it's presents and its unusual enough that few are knowledgeable enough to pick it apart (I sure can though). It's a nostalgia machine and its hard to be pissed off by nostalgia.

The only time that anyone really pissed me off was a sales rep at a car dealership where I was doing a photo shoot (where we had permission from the owner) using their faux antique gas station as a backdrop for the car. He spent 20 minutes walking around the car with a oiley rag looking for defects and acting like a big shot while two photographers sat around twiddling there thumbs killing time and someone elses money waiting for him to get out of the frame so they could shoot. Some people have no class and they don't even know it, I actually was embarrassed for him towards the end.

Only a very few people are true Richards and we only have to put up with them for a few minutes, they on the other hand have a lifetime to live with themselves.....Tedd

There are *** bags every where that think they know everything about everything. Everyone asks me what size engine I have, when I say it's a 350 I always get an unimpressed grunt. I think I'm going start telling people its a stroked 455 and see what happens. WTH they don't know the difference.

To the uninformed an Olds 350 doesn't sound impressive but we all know that engine, if done properly, can be turned into a high-winding screaming rocket that is anything but slow...

A few years ago I went to a afternoon "reunion" party for current employees and retirees. I brought my Cutlass and my buddy brought his mostly original 66 Impala. Everyone really liked my Cutlass and they all liked his Impala- That is until he left... Then they were all saying things like " why does he think this car is so great? It has scratched paint and it's no where near as nice as my new 66 Chevy was.... blaa blaa blaa). It really pissed me off. I never said anything to any of them. I wonder what they said about my Cutlass when I wasn't around? None of these guys had a old car or had a clue what it is to keep them going.....

Saw it on 442.com for an "interesting" price. Started e-mailing, got info, pics and videos. He wouldn't do PayPal so I grabbed certified check and wife's SUV, drove over 700 miles (10 hrs), picked-up a trailer in Flint and pulled car out of their barn. Drove another 700 "sweaty" miles (12 hrs) back. Needs lots of work/TLC but she's real with clean title.

I do
Let's see if I can get any uploaded.....
First pic is the barn it came out of in Montrose. Only sat there for about 7-8yrs. (NOTE: the 2 gentlemen in the picture lifted a '69 455 short block off the ground and put it in the back of my SUV! It's gotta weigh over 400lbs. Mid-western farmers are tough cookies.)

Many years ago while working on my '69 (W31) a couple walked by with the guy saying just loud enough for me to hear, "too bad it's not a 442".

Wow, that's a beautiful car!

The farmers around here are definitely a different breed. Most of them are much stronger then their size would let on. My wife's Grandfather surprises me every time I see him.

Well, that was the point of that car. Muscle car without the badging and insurance premiums. Yeah, he's ignorant and judgmental, but the idea is you would challenge him to a race and win.
