Separate a rear view mirror
Separate a rear view mirror
My 70 Cutlass has a metal rear view mirror that appears to be crimped together. I need to take the glass out and have it re-silvered. Anyone know how to take these apart? Thanks!!
The glass is held in by light glue on the backside And by the rubber seal around the edge. Dip the mirror in hot water or use a hair dryer to warm up the rubber lip and glue. Use a butter knife or other object to gently go around the perimeter and separate the glass from the rubber. Try to get behind the glass to pry it up. The edge of the glass may chip if you pry from the side. Patience is key, and you may have to reapply the heat a few times
I didn't realize there was a rubber edge until I took the mirror off. I thought it was metal. The heat idea worked great. I used a heat gun to soften the rubber edge enough to bend it back. Then used a putty knife to get behind it and gently push it down to release from the glue. I'm sending it out tomorrow to get resilvered. Thanks for the replies!
