Is there a way to determine which type of ring gear bolts, RH or LH thread, are used on a factory installed ring gear? I have a 70 3.23 ring gear that I need to remove from the carrier. Do LH threaded bolts have a different marking on the head to denote them as LH?

"L" is all I have seen

I don't do much ring gear removal though. What if you were to assume L, hit with the impact or hand tools, and see if clockwise spins 'em out. If not, try the other direction.

On the rearends that I presently have, the two 1968 versions (regular 28 spline and HD 31 spline) have RH threads and the 1970 and 1971 have LH threads. All are factory ring gears.

If they were rh they would have a R on it.

I would try a torque wrench. Set it to 70 lbs. Turn until it clicks right then left. If it doesn't loosen try 75 lbs. Then 80 lbs. And so on.
