Reviving my 71 Cutlass Conv

Bought my ride in 84..Sat in my pops garage until now ( it ain’t leaving ) anyway after having it sit since 93, I wanted to wake it back up..Want my pop to get to drive it around. Car had a blown head gasket & when I opened the valve cover, I found moisture damage & 1 cylinder isn’t firing..Not sure why the 1 cyc is down ( think it’s 7 ) no knock..Changed oil it was gray milk..Motor actually idles.I figure I pull the heads & send out ( not sure if they can be rebuilt & resurfaced) or acquire another set, install fix blown head gasket & see if it works..looking for ideas, constructive criticism & info on heads. I’d attach pics but this site confuses me

You will need to check the gas tank, brakes and hoses before you put on road.

If the car was down for a blown head gasket that would be the first thing to repair. While the heads are out I would clean the tank and fuel line. Then inspect and repair brakes as required. Then inspect your suspension and bushings.

If the car has been sitting since '93, just about everything will need to get checked. It sounds like you have the engine work in hand. As stated above, I would hit the brakes next. If you have power brakes, I would repair/replace the booster. Mine sat for a long time also and the diaphragm in the booster rotted out. I found that out at 50 mph when the brake peddle went to the floor. Luckily the road was not crowded. You will also need to check just about everything that is made of rubber. Most of it will have some sort of rot.

Best advice that I received when I started. Take it slow. Look at it in terms of several little projects, instead of one big one. Otherwise. you'll drive yourself nuts.

Bought my first Olds in 1987, trans went in 1994. Parked her down at my parents house till 2001. 2001-2002 got her back up to speed so to speak, worked out great.

Quick rundown, when you go to reply, click on "go advanced" then click "manage attachments". Hardest thing will usually be locating the pics you want to post. Once you know exactly where they are your set. Click upload then post and call it a day.

Don't overlook the transmission. See if the car will even move.
