Replace unmarked engine pistons
I disassembled my 1966 Oldsmobile 330 engine .I forgot to number my pistons. I'm hoping I can get some help and information on how to replace them after I had them cleaned and new rings replaced on them. Thanks!

If I remember right the PISTONS are marked with a notch to indicate FRONT, You need to be more worried about the rods, Are they numbered?? Did you keep the cap with the rod it came off of?? If not you need some serious help, If you did with the insert in the WIDER SIDE GOES TO THE OUTSIDE, This is to give the oil room to escape . Good luck

Its not the end of world. If it is truly re-ring-able within spec, there wont be any issues with them being in different holes (assuming properly assembly orientation and a competant engine assembler) it would be breaking in new rings anyway... Basically think of it this way, if one is different than another to the point if it standing out then it is probably out of spec anyway.

To be honest the whole thing about keeping a piston back to same bore would be like if you took it apart to inspect and clean only and did not hone it or replace the rings otherwise it would not matter since the hone would renew the surface.
