Buying Engine Kit From Kanter - Which Pistons Do I Get?

My engine is going .40 over. Poor thing was worn out, couldn't tell, except for that broken piston rattling around.

Anyhoo, I think I will get Kanter's Deluxe engine kit. I gave them a quick ring today while I was driving and he asked if I had a two or a four barrel. I am wondering if the the two barrel spec at Kanter is the low compression pistion. Mine has the two barrel with the 10.25 compression. I want to ensure I purchase the correct pistons the first time.

This is a '66 425, in a Delta 88 by the way.

What possibly could be the issue if I simply ordered the 4 barrel pistons?

If someone knows of a full engine kit at a better price, I would love to look into it.

Here is the listings....also, I need to ensure they give me the right camshaft (45 degree), which questions should I ask?

Hey,I think you should keep shoping.You should be able to beat those prices,and get better performing parts as well.I know alot of folks[me included]use speedpro/trw 2323,it's a forged piston w/15cc dish.There are probably some opinions about this ,so lets hear it guys!Later on,BO

I agree, you can usually beat Kanter's prices but I don't see the need for a forged piston on a street driven car.

In all honesty, given today's fuels, I wouldn't go above 9.5:1 compression ratio pistons (piston dish is how Oldsmobile changes compression).

If car has its original 425, you have a 45 degree engine- the one that takes the expensive cam. There's a drill spot at front of engine that is the best ID I know of between 45 and 39 degree engines, but I can't remember offhand which one has the drill spot. Padavano?

Yes, this engine is definitely a 45 degree. Also, it is and always will be a street car. Never ever to see the track. I also would prefer to keep the 10.25 ratio. It was born with it and I want to keep it there. I never had any detonation. I always fed it premium.

Any ideas on someone who sells a kit for this engine? I intend to place an order asap so I can get it back in the car.

I need everything that is in the Deluxe kit.

You might consider ordering a kit from Summit or Jegs. They have good prices and decent customer service.

I'm going to find out tomorrow if I mistakenly used lower compression pistons in my 425 rebuild. I've been trying to find a set of high compression pistons that aren't the $600 forged ones from Mondello. I can't find them on Summit or Jeg's, or anywhere else for that matter?? It seems that since Summit changed there site there aren't as many parts listed. Is it just me? Hopefully I won't need them, but if i do...

These pistons only seem to list for a 455 application. Summit doesn't even have my engine in their options list.

Your machine shop should be able to order your pistons in either high or low compression. Badger is one brand name of pistons....call them and inquire. They will have to bore the block and install pistons on rods etc anyway. A 455 piston is different than a 425. Take it slow and get the right parts. In 66 I believe all 4bbl engines were HC whille a 2bbl could have been either HC or LC....if you go with Kanter state that it is a 4bbl for HC pistons. Kanter kit pretty expensive. Things like oil pump, lifters, bearings, gaskets and most other things can be got off shelf from NAPA, Autozone and the like.

There are guys on e-bay who sell Kanter kits for almost $300 less than what Kanter sells them for. I may go in that direction.

He should have asked if you want low or high compression pistons.

I dont know how anybody else feels but I would stay away from Ebay kits...you dont know if you are getting seconds, knockoffs or what...I tried it once on a set of trw's...wont mention the vendor name...The ring lands were damaged but you wouldnt know it to see them...It was a good thing I checked...I think they were seconds..

There are good deals out there...but sometimes what looks to be to good to be true...is just that
