Production Volumes

A total of 3,900 Delta 88 Royale convertibles were made in 1972. But that's all the kind of record that exists, production by model and body style. Records with breakdowns by color, which engine, or other options were on the car were not kept and are not available. This a constant lament on here about Oldsmobile recordkeeping. For cars built before 1977, even with the VIN, Oldsmobile (or now, GM) can't even tell you things like through what dealer the car was originally sold nor what the final selling price was.

You can figure close to half of 1972 Royale converts had the 455 as high-line cars like that got the good stuff, and it was the last year before the artificial gas shortages of the 70s appeared. Non-standard 455 production decreased dramatically after that.
As far as options and colors, I don't know of any breakout. AT, PS and PDB were standard equipment by then, and earth-tone colors were very popular. You always see plenty of greens, browns and golds, sometimes blues. I rarely see a white or red 72.

There's a great book that was put out in 1996 called Setting The Pace. It was authored by Helen Early and James Walkinshaw and it tells the story of the first 100 years of Oldsmobile and it has a breakdown of production numbers by year and model. I don't know it it's still available but they gave them to all of the OCA members and the Olds dealers. I would look on eBay or Amazon for a copy, you won't be sorry.

This is where I got the production figure I mentioned above. It is a good book. If you can get it for the $4.99 starting bid on that ebay auction, it would be a steal. I bought mine from an Amazon seller. I paid about $20 for it two years ago. It's a very clean copy.
A number are available from amazon now for under $10 plus $3.99 shipping.
