Which power steering hose is correct?

Which power steering hose is correct?

Here are 2 pics of pressure side power steering hoses. Which one is correct for a September built 68 442 with AC? In particular, Im concerned with the pump side metal line. Notice one side is an L shape with one 90*. The other hose has an Z shape.The box side metal line is the same on both.
Can all of you 68 guys look at your cars, especially original cars.

I don't have a '68 442, but I went to the rockauto website and looked up pressure side power steering hoses for your car. Four are shown, from four different manufacturers, and all four look like the one on the left.

It just so happens that I'm replacing the power steering hoses on my '78 Toronado, and the pressure-side hose looks just like the one on the right with the sharp, 90-degree bend on the end that connects to the pump.

Mike from Fusicks is perplexed as well. He says the one I have looks like a 72. Mine has the hose on the right, the aged one. As far as I know this is an original. This is an unmolested car. This car was a 40K unrestored Cali car when I purchased it in 85. I put a yard pump in it way back in 86. All the brackets are correct, dual groove pulley for AC etc... Even has the little bracket that bolts to the first exhaust mani bolt is there. I don't think this hose has been replaced. I don't think the application hose on the left will fit. The pump and box in the car are date coded correctly. I have the OEM pump I took off in 86. No way the one on the left will screw into the pump then bend (loop) and be clocked properly to fit into the box, at least I don't think so. I put the hose in its approximate location and it's not right. Hard to get a good mock-up though as both the box and pump are with Marty Preuss getting upgraded to a 12.7:1, PowerSteering dot com (Chip trained and sold the business to Marty, Power Steering dot com out of Nixa, Missouri).

More early build car anomalies, (O9C)? Have to bring up a 67 hose and see what it looks like. Though the 67 pump is in a totally different location compared to the 68s. Nothing is ever straight forward...ever.
Here's my original line next to the Fusick line. Note the different sex ends too!(Edit the ends are ok on the new lines it's just the shape of the end that affixes into the pump differ from what was removed and what Fusick says is correct)

Does anyone have the ability to send pics of the pressure line in their 68 Cutlass or 442?

The best I can do is from a 70 442 auto and a/c, hope it helps. I would think that from 68-72; the only diff would be the the pump pulley maybe. That said, here you are.

TX tru-blue. The 70-72 is different, I think. The hose in your pic is similar to the hose I took off my car. The ones in your pics looks bent (damaged) toward the crimp fitting on the side coming out of the pump. If you straightened that bend out it would be exactly like the one I removed, L-shaped. As I've been going through this pump/box upgrade my memory is telling me that when I removed the original pump the pump-side pressure line twisted when I tried to remove it and I put a yard line on it...I think. It makes sense cuz when I unearthed the original pump it had a compression nut screwed from a line into the back side of the pump(no steel line just the nut). I think I had to cut the original line off circa 1985-6. Must have gone back to the yard for a line and all they had was the newer design? Or maybe that line conveniently came with the yard pump??? Just don't remember. I remember exactly where and when I did this but not that detail. So I think Mike and Kevin from Fusick are correct in that the 68-69s have the Z bend coming out of the pump whereas the 70-72s have the L bend. My box n pump are due back this week. I haven't sent the Fusick line back yet. I told Mike I'd try it first. But I'd still like to see a few other 68-9s to confirm which is correct. How about it 68-69 owners...Thankx again tru....

Here's a pic of my NON A/C April '68 built Cutlass when I pulled it apart.
I don't think anything was ever changed. All looked original.
Box side lines were cut about 1/4" from the fittings.
Hope this helps....


Maybe the A/C cars got the 'sharp 90 bend' and the non A/C cars got the 'Z shape' ??

TX Indy! That looks like the line Mike from Fusick sent me. This shows proper clocking too. I think the only difference between the AC and Non AC cars was the number of pulley grooves. And possibly that lower bracket attached to the block. I don't have that.

I just installed on on my pump, it looks exactly like the one on the left in the pic of the 2 hoses.
