Power seat, 4 way,

Have my driver's seat out and am troubleshooting the drive mechanism on the 4 way. The horizontal drive works fine, but the vertical does not. I have cleaned all and disassembled the transmission, found corrosion on the main shaft. Cleaned it up with some 220 and steel wool. Both drive shafts spin as they should.. I can't figure out why the vertical doesn't work. The switch operates the horizontal movement, but I have no action on the vertical. Working the switch up and down only moves the horizontal movement. I have the Fisher body manual and have followed it. Any help? threads I'm missing?

Does the motor run but not moving or does the motor not run either? The first thing I would suspect is the 4 way switch itself. If you rebuilt the transmission you will be capable of doing the switch also. The switch is made so that the transmission is powered shortly before the motor engages. When you pull the switch apart you have to be really careful cleaning the contacts because the transmission contacts can bend easy. Both sides of the transmission contacts and the top of the motor contacts need cleaned. This is the most often problem I find in your situation. Sadly the manual will not show taking this switch apart because they expected people to toss it in the trash and buy a new one. I have pictures on my home computer I can post later.

I have the switch out. A simple 4 way single toggle. I can't seem to get it apart to clean contacts, so I sprayed some electronic cleaner into the toggle opening several times and blew it out with can duster. How did you take the switch apart? the 4 tabs are impossible to release.

You have to go in the 4 sides. Each clip has a little tab that locks it in place. You push that tab in and up. The metal clip will pop up. Takes a really little screw driver or poker. Pay attention to the way the **** is in there because it is directional and can be put back in 90 degrees off. Also be sure the electric terminals are not corroded where it plugs in.

I have been getting ready for the MCACN show and forgot to post pictures. Several years ago I think I had a thread on this so you may be able to search for it.

Do you hear the seat transmission solenoids clicking when you actuate the vertical adjustment switch?

If not, it's the switch itself, the vertical solenoid, or the dog gear inside the seat transmission.

Since you have the switch out, try jumpering across the switch block vertical terminals and see if it does anything. If it responds, switch. If not, it's in the seat transmission.

Thanks for the tips. I tried to do that last night. Those tabs won't budge. Used a dab of penetrent.
ok, tried again just now and removed two clips. the other two are buggers but will keep at it. Thanks

Got it apart. Innards look good, but I cleaned all contacts with emery cloth and made sure the contacts were actually making contact. Installed and both actions work as they should.
