Pics from the junkyard
Here is some pics from the junkyard. These are not all Olds but its nice to know that people are getting a lot of use out of some of the G bodies before they are scraped.
This is a late 70's Monte I think. I actually saw this car flying down the street at full throttle a couple times. About a week after that I saw it in the junkyard.

There's a guy around here that sells cars from his acreage. He saves them from the junk heap and sells them whole as projects. One of our club members wanted to mount his 442 and W30 emblems on his 71 W30 and since the fellow who owns the acreage just bought a 72 442 W30 my friend went over to see the 72 and asked if I wanted to come along. Here's a bit of what I saw.

Hey Ken,
Who is this guy? Maybe sometime this year we could take a spin out there, it looks like an interesting wander through the trees. Looks like 2 67's and a 71 that would be nice resto projects. Shoot me some more pics, you have my home email.

There were no 57 wagons as far as I could see. He does pick up "new" cars from farmers every month so who knows. Check out his website.

The other guy (with an Oldsmobile yard) has a complete (as far as I could see) 69 Hurst for sale too. Don't know what he wants or if he still has it.

Ha ha. A few years back the Feds wanted to enact pollution controls on old cars. I remember writing a letter the the Environment Minister in Ottawa representing about 50 car clubs. The Minister wrote back and agreed that the older cars were too few in number and should not be subject to the emission controls since they were only driven on nice days. I had my car tested (by choice) and it and matched the environmental guidelines for the year it was made. So petitioning the government does work. New cars have to pass before they are sold in Canada so the owner doesn't have to pay for that and old cars are exempt...at least in Alberta.

The yard that I posted about in the thread "Sad Story" looked like the one in your pictures Ken except there were hundreds more cars and they were all in straight lines, in a pasture, no trees, mostly cropped grass because he let cows in to graze. The only thing you had to watch for were the cow patties. What a place that was!

That place reminds of when I was in Alberta visiting my granddparents. My grandfather took me and my dad to a place way down some dirt road to visit an old friend of his.
This guy must have been about 90 years old and lived in a cabin all by himself in the woods. I remember there were a bunch of old cars sitting in the field beside his cabin one of which looked to be about a 1955 or so Oldsmobile. He told me that he used to drive it up untill 10 years before when he lost his licence and couldn't drive anymore.
I always wanted to go back there and get that car but that was about 25 years ago and I was only 14 years old back then. Besides I am sure that I would never be able to find that place again and I am sure that the old guy is long gone.
What memories.......

Apparently Ken was at a gas station filling up his 1971 442 W30 4 speed when Ivan pulled up in his 1972 442 W30. They starting talking and Ken asked if he could make a template to reattach his 442 and W30 emblems on his car. When Ken had had his car repainted a few years back, he didn't want to drill holes in the fenders to reinstall the emblems. I guess after years of me bugging him he decided to put them back on.
When he was going over to Ivans place, I at first thought it was Vic's (& now Lorne's his son's) place. Ken (my friend) told me that it wasn't Vic's place that he was going to, but another yard and that I should come along. He said it was another old car collector and that he was talking to Ivan about the club and that he was interested. So I grabbed my Nikon digital and hopped into the W30. Ken said that the 72 had just come out of the body shop and the holes to the emblems were still exposed and he wanted to make a template of them. There were no cow patties but there were a few Rottweillers running around. The dogs looked mean but were in reality big ***** cats. As soon as you went near them they lie down in the hopes you'd rub their bellies. Seeing them from a distance, you wouldn't go near the place.
My buddy Ken's 1971 442 W30 4 spd., and Ivan's 1972 442 W30 below

Another friend (Jim) picked up a 1942 Oldsmobile B44 in a farmers field in Saskatchewan a few years back. A guy I work with who emmigrated from Mexico, just bought an acrage in Sherwood Park and it came with about 30 old cars in the field. He knew I was into old cars and asked if I wanted them, no charge. The cars were mostly 20's and 30's of all makes and needed lots of work, but I had no place to store them. I told as many people as I could and three or four cars were picked up, but the rest went to the scrap yard at $300 each. There are still barn finds available here. And because the climate is dry and salt is not used so much cars last a long time here. Also because of the latitude, you can find cars in a junkyard with immaculate interiors. Next time you're in Alberta check out the farms and acreages. You can usually see the cars from the road.

Ivan Perry is about 50 yrs old. I have another buddy (Rick) who has bought himself a car trailer and just loves visiting farms in Alberta and Saskatchewan to buy or just remove older cars from the farmers fields. Last year he picked up a 1970 442 and a 1970 Cutlass Supreme. He also picked up and sold a complete (needs redoing but was all there) 1953 Chev. I think he sold it for $800.

My grandfather had a farm in a small town called Carrot Creek in Alberta and he had quite a few old cars out in his field. We lived in Ontario so we didn't get out there very often but I would play in those cars for hours when we did go there. I can still picture that field and most of the cars in it and that was in 1976. (I was only 7 years old)
I guess that is where my love for old cars began.
