Pertronix III

Anyone running the Pertronix III? My sons 68 has the orginal type one now, but looks like it needs to replace. Want to know if up grade worth it or stay with the old one? Also looks like you need to change the coil also on the Type III?

I used a Pertronix kit 20 years ago on the 394 in my 64 98. While it worked well enough I'd recommend upgrading to an HEI distributor on a car with a 455. The Pertronix parts are propeitary but HEI modules are available at any parts store.

The issue you may run into with the Pertronix III is it's a multispark system that may raise issues with the stock tach. You would also need a compatible coil and wired to a full 12v. I've heard of issues with the rev limiter function adjustment changing due to engine vibrations. Other than that it supposedly runs well.

My personal experience is the first gen pertronix were the most reliable. I would just replace with the same model number unless you specifically want some of the III features (e.g. rev limit)

From my experience, I would throw the Pertronix in the trash and replace it with a good set of points and condenser.

X2 as Glenn said, reliability is not their best suit. My experience is if you have a Pertronix unit installed wear your walking shoes, their modulars suck...Tedd

Big thumbs down on Pertronix - I've had 2 and both died without warning while the respective vehicles they were in had been running down the road, each failed just outside their year's warranty and for no viable reason

I've been using the MSD ready-to-run electronic distributor now for last 4+ years - no issues. p/n 8529

I have had two of the Ignitor 3 HEI modules die, not buying a 3rd. I made sure to add plenty of the white paste included. None of the other brand modules expect an old MSD HEI module, 10+ years old, have failed.

I have had a Pertronix 1 in my 69 for 15 yrs. Knock on wood has worked well for me. Musta got a good one. I prefer the ones with the low tech. If you have one that works well leave it alone imo.

FWIW, I've had the HEI modules from the parts store go out on me during the summer when it's hot. I keep a spare in my glovebox and after changing the module the car starts right up again. Interestingly, the HEI module that crapped out is "good" again after it cools down. They even test good at the auto parts store. Cheap overseas parts...

Go to ebay and find a Delco NOS one. Don't get one of the newer ones made in China or Mexico.
