oops that was dumb..storing on convertible top ?

assumed I'd have no trouble finding space in my garage for a Thule cargo carrier when I bought it but it's much bigger than expected...which it really dumb of me b/c the specs are advertised.

until I figure out what to do long term...is there any reason I shouldn't lay it on my 71 A body convertible roof ?

It weighs 60 pounds...and wifey doesn't want it on her minivan when we're not traveling.

I don't like to store anything on a convertible top. Why not hang it for your garage ceiling with hooks and chain above your car. Then just make sure your car is out of the way to remove and rehang.

yea eventually I will build something to hang it from the garage ceiling joists...but knowing me that might not be for a few months.

When I bought I thought I'd put it in the garage attic through an opening I can climb through...but the carrier is too long to move through the opening and lay it down (very low ceiling in attic).

If it's in the garage, put the top down and store the container on top of the seat backs.

I wouldn't put anything heavier than a ping pong ball on my convertible's top.

But the car IS mostly parked in the garage with the top down, and I DO put stuff in the back seat!

No, I wouldn't do that. Tops should not be stored in the down position!

I'd try not and certainly wouldn't recommend it. But 60 lbs shouldn't do any damage. Before I put my new top on I'd put stuff on top of the car occasionally.

Edit and as Kurt already said much better to store car with top up than down.

True, but they shouldn't have containers piled on top of them either.

Do you have room to hang it on a wall? We have one and it hangs on a bar attached to the wall. They are big!

If I actually could afford a vert , I would be upset if a fly landed on my top , let alone store something heavy on it .

Bikes hanging on wall on one side, garden tools hanging on the other side, and boxes on shelves on back wall.

but how hanging on bar ? different than hanging from joist ?

more info: I have a hardtop too but I thought laying on the convertible would be a better option...but is it ? or better to lay on the hardtop with a blanket so it won't scratch ? the convertible roof is flatter than the hardtop roof, which is why I thought it would distribute the weight better

Don't be so lazy, spend an hour , hit the hardware store and hang it from the ceiling joist.

The more stuff I get the more creative I need to become. This is my Thule car top ski box. It will also hold 4 suitcases as it is quite large. I use a pulley system to raise and lower it, I attach extra loops after it is raised for safety.
Good luck

Ha! Problem solved! I guess you just need to do what you need to do and get it over with. Invite a couple of buddies over with some beers on Friday and have a guys night out in the garage. I do this every so often when I want to see my buds. As you guys can relate, it's hard to get your close friends together and when you do, it is great. You're glad you did it. Now get hangin!

not laziness...too many kids requiring/deserving too much attention, too many rides here and there, and with too much crap in the garage which combined with my own crap has created this dilemma.

If worse comes to worse, place a soft blanket or upside down rug on your hood, then a layer of that thick packing foam and put the box carefully on that.
I have done things like that in a pinch due to limited space.
Down side is that it gives less motivation to take a quick cruise!

Get a creative storage method planned for that soon.

Folding tops should be stored up to keep them wrinkle free. Also it keeps them stretched to fit. If it is down too long, it may become too hard to put it up again, esp in cooler weather. Forcing it will cause damage.
They also keep dust out of the interior...
