I don't want you guys to get the idea I spend all my time roaming garage sales. I do surf the local Craigslist a few times a week and when I come across the name "Oldsmobile" I look a little closer. I got this a few years ago from a guy who had collected Toronado's and I'm not real sure the story on it. With the GM logo I figured it might have been sold through the parts department at Olds dealerships. I was surprised to see "made in Japan" on it... but I guess back then toys like this were common from there. It has a metal body and I'm guessing its 1/18th scale, as it's about 16 inches long. Anybody seen one of these before?

My first thought would be a dealer promo car, but I thought they were smaller. I don't recognize the manufacturer on the box as something that was available in stores way back then.

 

That car should be about 17-12 inches long if it's the one I think it is?
Be nice to that box, means a lot to toy collectors if you sell it, sometimes worth more than what's inside.
That's a rare one, I would ballpark value it at about 750-1000 dollars in excellent to new condition, maybe more, hard to say with the dollar the way it is.

The dealer promotional model cars were pot metal then in the early 50's went to plastic, 1/25 scale.
They did make a Toronado promo from '66-'72.

 

A friend of our family worked for the local Ford dealership.He would get one every year. I remember as a kid playing with them. They had no children. So when he passed away his wife asked my mom if I would want them. Needless to say I have a collection of Fords.

I inherited a pile of Ford promos from an uncle as well as a couple of Philco promo radios. I have that Toronado too in yellow, not as nice and no box, but it was cheap on ebay so why not.

 

Bluevista, that would be really cool if it were a high value collectable. I will keep the box dry and out of direct sunlight.

alb, you'll have to start looking for Oldsmobiles to add to your collection!

Rocketrader, I agree collectable toys are a fun addition to the hobby. I've always enjoyed going to car shows and seeing a model or toy displayed on the dash of the restored "full sized" toy

 

It's worth the big bucks.

I used to collect and sell vintage toys.
Played with them then sold them and bought more.
I've had almost every toy I ever wanted and never got.
Replaced the ones I blew up with firecrackers or dismantled to find out how they worked.

I would like to do it with cars but I don't sell them after I get them.
Still have the dismantling problem but you can buy the directions on how to put cars back together.

I did have the back seat of My '64 dogdge 330 spare-door blowed up with bricks of firecrackers by a few of my buddies when we were out cruising.
When they went off I slowed down and jumped out of the car, and I was driving.
I showed them who they were messing with.

I modified a hardtop GTO model into a convertible like mine and put it on my dash at shows, if it isn't too hot out.
I hate when guys put them on the air cleaner and forget about them when they close the hood.
They may have had those Toronados at the dealer, they did have other promotional items, with that GM and Olds rocket logo it's very possible.
Plymouth had Strombecker slot car sets with Barracudas.
I've had a few of those sets.
I've never seen a factory large scale (1/32-1/24) Olds slot car except for the Strombecker Olds Powered Special Can-Am car?

I'll have to see about that, if they made one I'll have it listed or shown somewhere in my archives of old musty toy and hobby store catalogs and Sears Wish Books.

I'd guess the GM logo was to prove it was licensed and legal to sell. I don't think the promo cars are that big.

 

John, at Seven Springs this past summer, there was a display cabinet with probably a hundred different Toro toys all from one guy's collection! It was awesome....not that I can remember for sure, but I think he had one like that! Maybe someone here who was there, knows the guy? Anyway, I would have bought it.....

 

I thought all the promos were a 1/24 or 1/25 scale?
