Place a parts wanted ad and replace it.

If you want to repair that one instead of replace it, could you run a small bead on the underside with a welder? Or you could remove the tab from the top, drill a hole through it and secure it with a bolt/machine screw and lock nut.

This isn't even the correct cap for your car, this is a 1980s-vintage cap as used on the 307s. You can still get NOS ones on ebay. Also, I fixed your autoincorrect title.

Thanks, that makes me feel better about replacing it! I can either get a pos chrome one and paint it with the engine? We're they originally?

You could get the chrome oil fill cap and paint it. Or, just go to the salvage yard and find another one.

You could even go to the auto parts store and get an aftermarket one. Here's a listing for the Stant 10077. IMHO, $49.99 is way too much for anything but an OE oil fill cap from a 69 442.

Almost impossible to paint over chrome. It can be done but with lots of arduous work involved.

Good point Norm. The first step would be sanding it to prep it for paint. Quite an expensive proposition for an overpriced oil fill cap that isn't OE for a concours restoration.

Someone has a cap, GM p/n 409076 for your 69 on ebay. It's pricey as hell, but it's the "correct" cap for a 69 that ain't an H/O.
They're pretty proud of it for nearly $100, but it's for your year and application.

If you want to replace the cap you have right now, which is a 1986 V8, your crunched one, I have a brand new NOS cap like that, GM p/n 22531828. I'll let go for $40. It's a one year only. AFAIK, all these caps interchange with the twist top fill tubes. If not, no biggie.

Actually, the Sept 1968 printing of the parts book shows that the correct 1968-69 oil fill cap is P/N 6410387. This was superseded by 409076 in the Jan 1972 parts book. This is yet another example of why one needs to use a parts book printed as close to the date of the car's build as possible.

This is 6410387:

Man, I wish I didn't like the original so much. I'll look around if I can't find one for 40 I probably go with a new chrome one and just paint it? I'll trade a brand new set of 14" beauty rings for one?(3" wide)

I'm not sure about the Firebird or Trans-Am, but all the oil fill caps from an Oldsmobile engine will work with any other. 260, 307, 330, 350, 400, 403, 425, 455... Did I miss one, am I spreading lies?

All 1968-90 oil fill caps interchange. The 64-67 motors use a straight-sided oil fill tube that uses spring fingers on the cap to retain it with friction.

According to Joe (and 64). Thank you for the good news After I get the 'approval' to order more beauty rings I'll order that and I need a thermostat housing. Used but not pitted is fine. It's going to be painted anyway.

Place a Parts Wanted post in the Classified section for the thermostat housing, indicating model year & engine. I'll bet several members can fill your request.

BTW, in case you don't own this manual, Greg (Trophyblue442) just posted a Classified Ad for this. Extremely handy reference manual at a great price in excellent condition:
