When my dad passed away I was given his 66 Cutlass 422, 400, 30 over and torker high rise intake manifold. Before he died, he went through the ins and out and do's and don't to his baby. One of the items he made sure to mark in a catalog was Max Lead 2000 Octane Booster. Well, I am down to may last pre-measured bottle that he had in the trunk of the car and I am having a hard time finding this or any other similar product. What other products can be used to increase octane and reduce engine ping?

Depending on where you are, find out the closest place to get racing gas and see how much it is, it can get pricey. I've had great results in mixing 5 gallons of 100+ octane racing gas and the rest with premium gas. No ping, mileage went way up, runs alot cooler and better. If not, as mentioned above, Google is your friend to find anything.

 

Yes, I Googled it also and thought I was in luck when I purchased 5 bottles online Then to find out they just had not taken the product down from the website, as it is no longer made.

I am pretty skeptical about some of the octane booster products. I have read a lot of reviews that they dont do much to raise the octane.

I think I will try to find a place tha sells racing fuel.

 

You might want to see what your compression is before wasting money on boosters. Maybe you can get away with 91 or 93 if you have that in your area.

 

Tetraethyl Lead is able to be purchased online from many outlets.

There is a long thread on lead octane boosters on the Team Chevelle site, apparently Kemco is out of business.

 

Isn't there a chemical sold at Lowes or other hardware stores that is the equivalent to octane booster but way cheaper? I forget what it's called.

 

You can buy racing gas (105 octane) from NAPA stores. They sell it in 5 gallon drums (which btw make handy gas cans). If you have a race track near you then you can get high octane leaded fuel that they usually sell from pumps at the track. However, keep in mind the price will be steep. I was at the track last summer before the spike in gas prices and at that time 105 octane leaded was $9/gallon. I usually go 50% of the 105 and then 50% of something like Sunoco Ultra. However, I once did try 100% 105 and turned my timing up several degrees BTDC. It did give a boost in power and no knocking.

 

The Kemco octane booster is back on the market, not cheap for sure, but beats buying race gas..here's the link
