I have a friend that has a Packard-Merlin out of a P-51 from WWII. It is fully functional and runs on a stand. It comes in at 1750 cu in V-12. It is the most impressive engine I have heard.

Oh, it could go further south...

... after lingering a bit longer where it is, anyway.

He actually owns one. If you have ever seen the show "Jay Leno's Garage", he has a 1930 Bentley with that P-51 (27 liter v-12) mustang engine. He says that it does not turn very well, but that it eats sports cars for breakfast from the line.

I'd like to see how the transmission is connected.

Hydroplane racing,

remember all the hydroplanes from the 60's and seventies all ran Merlins, packards etc, close to 200 MPH on water talk about brass ones, then helicopter engines took over... here is an interesting site if your interested

Seeing as how we are digressing as well as the conversation going south, I've always been thoroughly impressed with the accomplishments of Australia's Ken Warby's self funded, self built and piloted, world record water speed holding boats. His first was constructed under a tarp in his back yard. Truly inspiring..
