Now THIS is a big block

Assembling a 1729 cu in four cylinder Fiat engine. Note that EACH CYLINDER displaces 432 cu in!

That monster made modern performance HP levels back then. Wow. While good, elegant design is great, there's also something neat about just scaling engineering up for massive results, too.

If all else fails, get a bigger hammer.

No, THIS is a BIG block:

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version. Some facts on the 14 cylinder version:Total engine weight:2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)Length:89 feetHeight:44 feetMaximum power:108,920 hp at 102 rpm Maximum torque:5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

"No substitute for cubic inches" is an older philosophy than many might think.

Enzo Ferrari described the racing pre war Bentleys as "The fastest lorries in the world". W O Bentley is reputed to have said if one of his cars left the track and careered into woodland it would knock the trees down rather than stop.
Btw "Lorry" is British for "truck".

What struck me is that at 432 cu in, each cylinder displaces as much as a BBO.

Yeah, that particular ship engine has been around for a while. Obviously not something you'll put in an automobile.

(sorry about the previous hi-jack)

Yeah, and that Fiat engine has something else in common with a Toronado: Chain Drive. Check out the picture of the car at the link Joe provided (can't download it for some reason).

It's humorous, too, how tall the engine compartment is with that monster 4 cylinder under the hood. Looks like two guys piloting an airplane of the same era: you can see up, but not straight ahead.

Did you see the size of the hood on that car? Looks like it's going to give birth!
