The 1967 cars only used a notched valve cover on the driver side, and it was the same notched cover as used on the 68-72 cars since it was designed to clear the same 11" booster (64-66 cars used a 9" booster and did not need the notch). The 64-67 HVAC box is different from the 68-72 cars and does not require the notch. I've never seen one like this either. Could be mal-formed?

You mention the top being "indented" as in a trough; I think that was only in 1965.

The parts book is no help. Maybe Climatic Combustion Control? Those units had a lot of weird pieces.

The valve cover in question is definitely 1964-65. The round "areola" around the breather hole (yes, I'll be using that from now on... ) is unique to those years. The 66-72 valve covers are flat across the top. The 73-90 covers use a raised area around the breather but it is D-shaped, not round.

But why would it need a notch? There's nothing to clear.

IDK never seen one but a lot of self contained powerplants have a lot of framework around them for various reasons, air intakes, heat exchangers etc.it is weird!
