Northstar water pully system failure

Hi my daughters caddy a 1999 Eldorado's had the tensioner pulley disintegrate. That part is available for purchase. The drive pulley that comes off the engine has the melted remains of the tensioner pulley filling the groves on it. Don't think it can be saved the water pump and its metal pulley is fine. Does any one know if the drive pulley off the engine can be removed and replaced, and its name so i can get one thanks.

Hmm... not sure what you are talking about. If you have pics that would help.

By drive pulley, do you mean the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft? If so, that pulley is metal and you should have no problem removing the plastic remains of the idler pulley from the grooves. Try it first, no sense on wasting hours of time and a bunch of money when it is not needed

This is a 32v side mounted engine the front cams run the pulley the water pump gets its power from. the pulley is a composite with what looks like brass in the middle and thermoplastic making up the largest portion of it. If it was metal I would just clean it. There is only the power pulley the tensioner pulley and the water pump pulley working with a small belt I have never seen any thing like it but it worked fine until the bearing in the tensioner pulley failed and disintegrated causing enough heat from friction to melt the gear and coat the drive pulley with debris.

x2 on the harmonic balancer/pulley unit.

That had to make noise, smell or smoke, or all three at once.

The idler is called a belt tensioner pulley they have it at rockauto. I hope a small pulley puller can get the drive pulley off seen no key way to knock out probably just pressed on. The daughter heard a noise but ignored it. Thank heavens for the limp on home feature.

That's because there isn't supposed to be a bolt. The pulley is pressed on, just like the PS pumps on the 307s. The threaded hole is there so you can install the pulley. The installer tool screws into the hole then a nut threads onto it to push the pulley onto the shaft. You'll need the pulley removal and installation tools for the PS pump pulley. I doubt you'll find a new pulley anywhere other than at a dealer.

Ouch!
What a mess... I hope mine does not do this.

I have the 1997 Caddy shop manual if you need any pages from it. If so, just lemme know.
Hope she learned to never ignore strange noises that are trying to tell you something.
