Once again, unless and until cash actually changes hands, any bids under reserve are meaningless. For all we know, these are shill bids. ASKING price does not equal value.

 

Well put Joe. Lots of smoke and mirrors in auctions; live, eBay, you name. Do not, I repeat do not believe what you here and see at auction situations.

 

I would not pay that but if you ask me so far that price is not that outrageous - I've seen crazier

 

BTW 70-72 cutlass wheel opening mouldings are service parts that I warn my customers about all the time. At some point after 1972. GM sold some "service part" wheel opening mouldings that don't fit as well as the originals. I've seen "NOS" sets get sold and then resold when folks find out how bad they fit. ~BOB

 

Were the wheel mouldings different for the W30? I would have thought this would be an easy part to find.

 

Used ones are out there by the thousands but most have a ding or extra holes in them. I have some NOS ones and they are not any better than many used ones.

 

I saw the same set-by the same seller for sale about 4-5 months ago. Top bid was around $610-$630, but did not meet reserve.

 

They are at $633 as of now.

I think the reserve is clearly crazy high but I have seen those priced even higher. I was also thinking about some of the other goofy items that sell for some much - think about the rallye pac oil sending unit, for what those are they are quite expensive or a correctly dated set of poverty rims and caps - those were also made by the thousands. I prefer good ole used stuff in great condition. As mentioned many times used is in as good if not better condition than NOS and as Octania says - once its on your car it isn't NOS any more.

They are different from a supreme compared to the fast back or the convertible. The 70 supreme are shorter as they only go part way down the wheel arch to match up with the trim of the supreme hardtops.

 

That's funny since if you look at auction prices for Olds W cars are still down. A fool and his money shall soon part. I need a few rare parts for my car and if the prices stay stupid I will just do with out.

 

Just finishing a rotiserie resto on a 70 W car.
The repop WW openings are crap so I "bit the bullet" & bought a NOS set for $650. Disappointed in the fit & they were stained from years in the wrappers but cleaned up nice on a buffing wheel. With a bit of work they now fit OK.

 

Some people have deeper pockets than others. Some sellers ask top/world record prices for their stuff. I imagine depending on supply, eventually they get their world record price. It's all according to how bad the buyer needs it and how quick the seller wants to sell... Welcome to the world of Oldsmobile.

 

The way that the bidding frenzy was early on, I really thought that these moulding were going to go north of $1,000.

 

I use to sell Olds parts years ago. It was fun and I made some money to help offset my Moneypits. Sometimes I was amazed at the prices. I bought a 66 Cutlass that was sunk into a field. I was after this car for 3 years, finally I saw a for sale on the house. They were getting a divorce, bought the car for $80. Thanks to the 12 ton wench on my truck I got it load. Car had nice wheel well mouldings. I took my time getting them off and they cleaned up nice. I put them on ebay wit a reserve.of $80. If I got that out of them I would have been happy. I was way more happy at the auction end, $330. Buyer was happy also, he may be on this site. Ken

 

People are free to spend there money the way they wish. I just think its gotten stupid same goes for trailer queens and over restored cars total waste in my book.

 

Which is again why bids that don't meet reserve are meaningless (and also sometimes shill bids).
