new windshield
new windshield
i am wondering if anyone has had any dealings with auto city claissics in minnasota. they priced a new windshield for my 1959 olds 98 at $299, which is about $200 cheaper that anyone else. i would like to know if they are honest before i buy it. please let me know. thankyou
They are not a member of the BBB, so they have no accreditation and no history to research. Doesn't mean they're not good to deal with though. What makes you suspicious of them? Their web page is pretty amazing with the products they offer. If it was me, I'd certainly go for it.

i just don't want to buy a windshield from them and find out that it is not the right one. the 59's did have several different windshield. so just trying to be careful of where my money is going and not to waste it in this hard economy
I think they're who I got the Toronado's windshield from, but that was 20 years ago. It shipped here by truck and I picked it up at the terminal. It was crated very well and had hard foam bags all around it inside the crate.
Granted, a Toronado windshield only fits Toro/Riv/Eldo so I didn't have to worry about getting one for another bodystyle.
Here's an interchange from a 1962 Olds body parts catalog I have.
1959 & 1960 Holiday Coupe, Holiday Sedan, Convertible use the same windshield in all series. So the hardtops and the convertible are the same. These will be 37, 39 and 67 body styles as indicated on your body plate (as in 59-3837 is a 59 Ninety Eight 2-door hardtop, 3839 is a flat-roof four-door hardtop, etc).
1959 & 1960 two and four door sedans and station wagons use the same windshield in all series. These will be 11, 19, 35 and 45 body styles. 59-3819 is a 59 Ninety Eight four-door sedan (no 11, 35 or 45 styles in Ninety Eights)
Other GM B & C body cars also used these same windshields. Buick Electra and Cadillac six window sedans may be different, but 59 is supposed to be the year GM went for common bodies in all five Divisions.

This might be a bit off, but I've had a couple people tell me lately, that when they buy new windshields, they're coming very thin, and they end up with a gap between the glass and the trim. I've been told by some, they'd rather have an old windshield the correct thickness, than the new ones they ended up with. Has anyone else out there had to deal with this issue? Maybe price is related to quality (or thickness) of glass. I personally haven't bought a new one in decades, so this is only coming second hand.

I haven't dealt with it yet, but the wagon has developed a nasty water leak right over the steering wheel- meaning if I get caught in a downpour with it I look like I peed myself.
Glass shop I use said it had some type of seal tape that didn't work well with sealer goo so they say the windshield has to come out for all new seal tape. They mentioned that some new windshields are thinner than OE spec, but at least they can get one for the old beast. Buddy had one put in a Ford truck several years back and noticed it was thinner than the cracked original.

Actually, just last week a fellow told me he bought a new windshield and was installing it himself. It was considerably lighter and thinner than the original. Said he had to use extra thick seal to get it to the correct height. I wonder if someone is making cheaper windshields with less material. Wouldn't surprise me. If so, I hope they still have the correct safety features built into them.

Try this company "The Auto Glass Installed Company" 763-2740177 ask for Nancy. The company owner is great with the old classics. He is spending his time teaching the younger kids classic auto window install skills. He will come out to your house to remove
and replace. Or as with me he removed it for me and allowed me a few days to prep the area around window ( rust removal etc.) and then returned to install. Great guy great fun people. Located in monticello area. Cell phone is 763-360-5216. Tell them George sent you.

olds windshield
okay another reason that i am wondering about them is that they list the same windshield for all of the 59 olds together. that is just mot the way that it is by the interchange book for 1959 and 60 olds that i bought. i could ask for one for a 59 chevrolet hardtop which is the same and see what is there also. just trying to be careful here.
I bought a windshield frm them in april. There a family owned business. I was treated great and the quality is really good (could not tell about the thickness though) For an extra fee they will even Date code it for you. I would buy from them again if I ever need another piece of glass. Hope this helps
