A new scam to me.
I am in the process of selling my Toyota Rav 4 and put on Craig's List. I got a text from someone that seemed interested in the car. Then he wanted a report from autovinfacts. He won't come look at it until I get the report. I did a check and the site is a fake to get your credit card info and the buyer is a shill. I didn't get taken but want to make sure nobody else does.

I recently sold a car on CL. Got a good price, cash money, no scam. However, before CL yielded a legit buyer, I got all sorts of fictitious people who weren't willing to look at the car unless I could supply them with an "XYZ Report". It was so obviously a scam, it was actually funny, but I never figured out the angle. I näively offered to send the first few a CarFax to no avail, so a credit card phishing expedition as described in OP is as plausible as anything, I guess.

I've sold tons of equipment, vehicles, apparel, etc. via CL over the past 20 years. I recently sold ~$900 worth of Indian motorcycle apparel. Depending on what you're selling, yeah you'll see the annoying pathetic scammers on occasion - they're easy to spot. CL is fine & dong well.
What would make this thread more meaningful is a full disclosure of the persons name, e-mail address, etc. - anything you can provide other than "someone".

File a report with the FBI to let them know about this scam. Don’t let those scammers get away with this stuff!

I ran into a similar (assumed) scam just today selling my Yamaha R1 on FBMP. Guy offers full price, no haggling, and wants to come look at it, - NOW - from "far away." Wants to know if I want cash or cashiers check for FULL AMOUNT, and likewise won't talk until I send him a "CVI Report." CVI = CarVinInspect.com. Web site wants to know EVERYTHING about me including a credit card. It felt really sketch, so I googled and bing'ed around and found not one positive thing about it. All the scam-watcher websites said to basically "stay away." The domain was just registered this past July. I closed the chat with the guy and blocked him.
I got the same scammer.. I think!
Did he say his name is David? contact from +1 202 850 9403 ?
The guy is relentless, after I said that I paid autovinfacts twice and got nothing from there, he gives me another site carscheckup.com, I offered to give carfax report, he says he gets more info from autovinfacts. Nice scam.

The site says to
- Contact your local authorities and file a report.
Please tell them you filed a report with the IC3.
