New to Me: 65 Hardtop

Just want to show you guys the car that Jim(JATA) just sold to me.
I'm quickly falling in love with this thing as it really doesn't need much at all.
(So the next time he posts something for sale...jump on it!)

Mostly light surface rust on body, floors and trunk are scaly...but frame is very clean.
Started right up and I drove it on the trailer!

Enjoy!

I plan on using the best parts for my club coupe resto.
The radiator support, wheel wells, engine brackets, fan shroud etc....will all make their way onto the f-85.
This car will be driven as is and kept in running condition as a fun driver.

Whatever is 2nd from my coupe will find it’s way onto this car.

exactly like i started with, color wise. white/blue. mine was in rougher shape. looks like you got a gem there.when you pull the tail panel trim or sand it,let me know if yours has blue under it. mine did, original paint but blue around tail and rear pkg shelf. thought it was just mine, but the dark blue one i have for parts has the same lt blue under the same places.

Having a little fun...scotch-brite & wd40
I think I'm going to try and clean it up a bit. See how nice I can make it on a budget!

Steel of a deal

Looking at the overall condition, I would say you got one hell of a deal. I have a club coupe that is a close twin to that one.
piece it together and enjoy.
Congratulations.

if thats a lansing built car,id be interested in the production sequence number, and build date ,these cars were painted in blocks, meaning,
x amount of white then x amount of another color, and so on. made it easier in paint dept and trim shop to have a bunch of the same color at one time. just wondering how close to mine it was built.

I'm also working on a club coupe...this was just a distraction and too good of a deal to let slip by.
Stay in touch...I'd love to see your progress.

That's incredible, Peter! Is the brown not the surface rust it appears to be? How did you do that?

It was indeed surface rust. I read about guys using CLR to give it a bath....but decided to do this first.
Just spay on some WD-40 and hit it with a scotch brite pad. Doesn't take much effort at all.
I'm shocked myself.

My 66 Buick is on the same plane. Car sat under trees forever. I gave it a good cleaning and love. Made a huge difference

A little more fun work. Wired wheeled the wheels, primed and painted.
Having trouble with these particular dish caps...so they're hanging on the wheel just for looks.

Don't you have a club coupe resto to be working on?

I get it... this is the new toy, and once you start something (cleaning up the appearance), it's hard to stop. Keep 'em coming, we're all enjoying your efforts on this.

Thanks guys. I’m finding this type of project SO liberating!
With the 70, I’m constantly fixing and tweaking the engine, trans etc.
With the club coupe It’s all parts hunting and planning
With this car...it’s low buck, get it looking fair, fixing little stuff to be ok...and planning on getting ready to drive it!
It’s a blast! It’s cheap. It’s fun.

BackintheGame...you nailed it!
Level of effort: Low
Level of satisfaction: off the charts.

I just want to have a cruiser that’s relatively easy.

I love watching you bring this car back to life. This is how we did it in the 60’s and 70’s not over spending, just fixing her up the best we could afford to. Kind of how I did my 64.

You've got to be kidding me TJ, your car is GORGEOUS!
And as you can tell, I'm a big fan of the white steelies and poverty caps...
PM me some other pics of your car if you could...love to see more.

I only have a couple of pics. Car is driver quality, have been picking away at it for three years. Paint is about a thirty footer. White hides a lot of sins. I got rid of that ugly hood scoop last year.

Had a good day. Took some time off work to strip the '64 and move some bright work to this '65.
New slash moldings, better drip rail molding...more cleaning.
Now...time to add some bumpers and grill/bezels!

Sorry for all the pictures...but I really love the progress on this one.
