Need help replacing title!

My Dad bought our '66 cutlass somewhere in the New York State in 1989 and imported it to Germany.
Yesterday he told me, that he can't find the title anymore and it must have got lost within the past 22 years
My question to you is, how I can get a title as fuss-free as possible?
We have a bill of sale, the number of the last registered license plate and all the shipping and toll documents.
I won't get a german registration without a title, so it's of great importance for me.

It would be great if someone could help me, maybe some of you have gone through something similar already...

Thanks in advance

Muenchen is a beautiful city. We went there in 2006 to visit cousins.

I live in NY and they do not provide titles for cars made before 1972. For cars this old, the registration and bill of sale is the proof of ownership. I actually bought a 70 olds in another state and had to turn in the title when registering in NY. You get a registration that says transferable on top versus a new car which would have a title and registration should not say transferable. Therefore a transferable registration becomes your title. Only issue is since your registration is from 1989, NY may have had titles for a 1966 model back then.

Does your registration say transferable? Even if not, show the German authorities the NY state division of motor vehicles website that says no titles for 1972 or older cars. I think it is www.nysdmv.org but google it.

Pm me and we can talk further. I can go to my local NY DMV office and ask them and ask them what could be done for paperwork but they will probably not give a title, but could maybe give some similar document or you can call their phone# Do you still have the NY plates and registration - even the sticker on the windshield? That would be a start for them to look it up.

he is going to need the registration they didn't have titles for 66 either but if he has lost the reg or never transferred it it may be much more problematic as the registration may well still be in the previous owners name? If it was registered in his name it could probably be as easy as getting a new registration . If not I think the process could be very involved especially from overseas

Thank you very much! PM sent!

Thanks for your reply, too Eddie! I have the copy of the registration, that says the vehicle was transferred to my Dad. I do have the window sticker as well! If there were no titles in 1966, why could it be exported then?

And yes blessedly dad's still alive

Hi,
we found the original registration card and a clearance certificate, which certifies the ownership of the vehicle.
So it should be no problem to get it registered in Germany.
Thanks to all of you again!
