My 1969 442 is missing the cowl tag which really sucks. Is there any way of getting the information (color, options, etc) that is found on the cowl tag by searching the VIN or any other method. Thanks

 

Is it a Canada car? They MAY have some records on it.

If not, it's going to be a slog. If it wasn't built in Lansing (M in the VIN), you COULD you run across a build sheet or some broadcast cards or something that could help narrow things down. The only thing the VIN will tell you is year, body style/series, where it was assembled, and sequential plant build number for that series.

 

As noted, unless the car was built in Oshawa or originally sold in Canada, the only way to get that info is to find a build sheet. That will be nearly impossible for a Lansing car. Other assembly plants and you have a chance.

 

Look under the back seat and see if there is a Fisher body tag attached. My Lansing car was pretty rough but it still had one. This is an example of what one looks like (this is a 68), i believe 69 used the same type of card:

With the exception of Oshawa, there really isn't much info on a cowl tag that you can't get close by inspection (original color, trim level, interior color and seat style, etc). Cowl tags are reproduced and with a little research you can even zero in on a build date for your car from the VIN.
