Lucas oil additives question 🤔
Lucas oil additives question 🤔
Hey all I was wondering if it's OK to use both Lucas oil stabilizer and stop leak together? My '72 Supreme 455 has a small oil leak, but I also like the benefits of the stabilizer. I use Valvoline 10w30 VR1. Also, do any of you use Lucas or something else?
My personal opinion: if most the additives on the shelf served a purpose or had any benefit, they wouldn’t be on the shelf. The refinery would have added them in the manufacturing process.
Having said that, there are a few additives that are useful. Break in additives, zinc additives, things like that I can see buying and using. In the case of oil additives for a flat tapper cam, it would probably be cheaper just to buy the oil formulated for flat tapper cams instead of buying the extra stuff.

I wouldn't waste the money on the stop leak. While not doubt Lucas products are good stuff I question if it is really needed with Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil. VR1 has all the zinc you need. Be sure and use a good filter like Wix or NAPA Gold which is the same thing.
Always do sir!😀
Try to identify and repair the leak first. Oil additives aren't good at sealing leaks particularly on rope rear main seals that Olds used from the factory if that is your leak. Neoprene seals on other makes can be softened sometime to reduce the leak.
IMO a stop leak additive in this case is not a good choice until the leak is identified. Also IMO don't use oil stabilizer either, use the VR1 and the good filter you already use sans additives.
Good luck!!!

Never used an oil stop-leak until my son told me that a pint of the Lucas product stopped a minor leak on his 2003 Wrangler. So I tried a pint on my 1990 Sierra, and it worked there, too. Was worth the $5 risk. Unlike the olden days, Lucas isn't a seal-swelling solvent. It's a viscous oil. Not sure how it works; don't think they're disclosing that.
