Cool Photos

Thanks for presenting these photos. I love looking at old car photos not only to view the cars but the backgrounds as well. I thought that I would throw in some old photos of some of my dad's Oldsmobiles. The Seafoam Green 67 was his and I bought it which was my first car. The 50 was his first ride. The Burgundy 67 was bought in Cheyenne in 1966. He took top honors in his class with the 64 Cutlass at Cheyenne Dragway in 1966. The Black 67 was bought it in 1974 then he did a rattle can paint job on it as money was tight with 4 kids in the house.

Jack Thompson Oldsmobile (Demolished)
Oak Lawn, IL
Photo and info courtesy Bruce R. Cassi / 2002

"Jack Thompson Oldsmobile was known as the "home of the Free Loaner Car". The main building's showroom only held 8 cars, but behind the service department was a 50 car indoor showroom. This rooftop sign burned bright for over 50 years. On August 2, 2002, through tear filled eyes I watched, along with former employees, mechanics and customers as this dealership was reduced to a pile of rubble."

^ This is where my delta 88 came from.

Jack Thompson is where my Cutlass came from. They had a giant plaque that went on the back of all the cars, with push pins. Part of my plaque was missing so I drove up there and asked if I could have a new one. The parts guy gave me one but thought I was nuts. He said he'd never had anyone ask for a new one before. Heck it was better than a bunch of holes in the trunk lid.

Even though my car is borderline not a viable automobile now, that "new" plaque is on the trunk, just as shiny as can be.

Muller Brotherss Car Wash 1951

Muller Brotherss Car Wash 1951 3,000,000th car

Oldsmobile-MissLubeRack1951_zpsfe379363.jpg

In 1951 the Muller Bros., an Oldsmobile-Firestone Tire-Car Wash-Cafe-Body Shop-Home Appliance-Auto Supply Dealer located at Sunset and Ivar in L.A., California, named their complex "The Landing." With good reason, they had everything you could want on one lot. It was giant compared to most new and used car dealers of the time, [it] even had a control tower. They came up with the idea to hold a beauty contest to celebrate the 3,000,000th car to be pulled through its car wash. Life Magazine was there to photo-document the PR event for the rest of us to look back on. Obviously, all the girls, the winner of the beauty contest, and the car wash winning dude, look pretty happy.

(The full series of photographs from this event can be viewed here.)

Looks like there is some polishing that needs to be done on those rear bumpers and wheels.

Scot, where the heck do you turn these up? I have scoured the net, College and University archives, and State archives online, and I have turned up zilch!

I was thinking the same thing. Possibly this is a car with dark paint and black stripes, they may not show up in the pic.

Wow!!!
Pics 324, the girls in the trunk. I knew Donna and Dana. Dana was my friends older sister, I was about 13 at the time. Donna and Dana always teased me I had a major crush on both of them.
325- Rick Canup, he became a very successful Realtor, I believe his business Rick Canup Realestate is still in business. My dad and brother know him well. My brother probably knows more of the people in the Womble Olds pics, hes the same age as many of them.
Womble olds eventually sold out to become Villa Olds in a new larger building on Ave. Q at about 54th St. Both buildings are still standing.
My dad bought a new 62 Olds 98 4 door from Womble, its what i took my driving test in. Long car!!! I bumped the pole parallel parking but still passed LOL, I loved that car....... so many great memories!
Thanks for the pics!
Steve

Is that Trophy Blue or a little lighter? It would be Jamesbo's dream cruiser.
