Jacking up rear end : Basic Question?

I have what I think is s pretty simple question. So, apologizes in advance.

Planning on replacing shocks on the rear end of my 72 Cutlass. Want to put it up on jack stands and block the front wheels, etc.

Best to place the jack right under the rear differential housing? Best place for support?

Once up the jack stands can simply go under rear axle housings on both sides, right?

I know these are simple. Some other online searching versifies this is correct, but always feels right come back to this forum with any questions.

Thanks again!

Put the jack stands under the rearend. Jack it up from the center of the rear.

I would jack the car to a sufficient height and then support the car in the frame near the back end in front of the wheels. Then, I would position the floor jack under the center-section of the rear. By doing this the rear can lowered or raised independently from the body. When removing the shocks be careful that the rear has some tension on the rear coils as they are close to removal. You may want to change those rear coils now anyway. They are cheap and if sagging you are most of the way through installation.
